What do you keep your books in?

I have a bookcase, but I want something small that I can put some 'books of the month' in forward facing.

Any ideas anyone?

What about one of these

There was a competition on here to win one a while ago - I think Pauline had tried one and said they were quite durable.

What about going to your local shoe shop and asking for a large shoe box. Either you could decorate it with images from the internet of well known book charactors or get the children to decorate it.

or if you are near an Ikea they do lots of different boxes very cheaply.

Much cheaper than £9 for a cardboard box

i did have all my board books in a basket for children to help themselves, proper books are on a high shelf that i get down to read to the children (hate books getting spoiled!)

i found they only really read the ones in the top of the basket tho so now every morning i get about 6 books out and put them on the coffee table in the lounge area of my through lounge/diner. I encourage the children to sit down to read and vary the books every day and have found that the children look at them much more now.

I have some on the shelves, some on the sofa, some in the corner on the floor and some on the bottom two stairs. I keep a few in each toy box too - usually kind of related to box contents.

I have one of these (http://www.e-quip4education.co.uk/acatalog/Wire_Book_Storage.html) on the wall. Children always choose the books from here rather than the ones on the shelf.

I have this. Its canvas material so not the strongest but I use it for the current topic and the boxes underneath have puppets, activities, colouring books etc relating to the topic too.

I like these! problem I have is we have huge windows so not much wall space. do you reckon one of these would hook over a radiator? Our radiators are never really hot btw :)

You might be able to. Mine is quite big but I bought for a silly price in a sale. Loads of places do them in different sizes. You can get freestanding ones but that might not be ideal with the age group you look after!

True! They quite pricey on that site. Sweets basket idea is sounding good

I like those, the only thing is they're not so pretty (I use my lounge for minding). Is there enough room that you can put one book behind the other (does that make sense?).

I looked at your website by the way, I LOVE your photo album!!!

Ah thank you:blush: . You are right they are not the prettiest but I have mine in my kitchen area so not really a problem. You can fit quite a few books on each shelf but I like the children to see the whole book cover so they know what they are choosing. So I just rotate the books every few weeks

I have a basket too for board books (as they are a little heavy for the wall hanger). This also works really well:thumbsup:

I've got this one & love it!

It's not too big, is pretty & holds a good amount of books. We have big bookcases in the hall with hundreds of books on, so I chose about 20 or so at a time to put in the book rack.

I had one of these until a 2 yr old pulled the whole lot on top of her :panic: After this I invested in 2 smaller ones which were better. I have resorted to using a plastic box at the moment because I have 2 very clumsy under 2's :D

I have an 18m old, (M), who pulls all the books out of my bookcase and throws them all over the floor. She will then occasionally pick one up and look at it.

She doesn't yet like to sit with us at storytime and listen, she just wants to pull as many books out as she can. This disturbs our story time a lot as I keep having to rescue books from either being torn or trodden underfoot by M whilst I am reading with the others.

Like some others I have my board books in a basket so they can help themselves. It's the other books which are in the bookcase. The board books are in the playroom and the bookcase is in the lounge; we all get comfy on the sofa to look at books together.

I'm so fed up with continually picking up the books that I have to keep the children out of the lounge when M is here unless I am with them. This week I have removed all the books from the lower three shelves and put them upstairs. M cannot reach the books at the top, so those are safe. I am now looking for a suitable cupboard with doors, (to which I can attach child proof catches, for my lounge). In this I can hopefully store the books and just open it up when we are choosing books to look at. Then I won't have to keep going upstairs to get books for each day.

The sad thing about this is that the other children I mind won't be able to just go and choose a book by themselves any morehimself any more.

I am continually telling M not to get all the books out but she is totally heedless:mad:

My daughter was exactly like this - she also had a thing about videos (before the days of dvd's  ) and she would pull each one out, take the video out and then start on the next!

She LOVED it! and it kept her hapy for hours - so I used to collect argos catalogues and other chunky mags, some old books, and some old videos which she could ruin. I put them on the bottom shelf and put the other nice books out of the way.

I've read somewhere (I think it may have been on here) an instruction how to make a similar one to hang on the wall. Will see if I can find it.
