I suppose it depends on the children you're minding, my house is quite small and I can be in the kitchen and still see part of the lounge with the children playing in there, the door is always open into the kitchen/diner - they always follow me everywhere anywhere anyway

8+ as ofsted really only are interested in under 8's

and only if my children ask mindees to play (normally my dd and mindee aged almost 11 will play a board game upstairs)

I have a large lounge diner with a conservatory at the back of the dining room and i keep an eye or a listen on all children but will allow around 2+ to head off from one bit to the other where they are out of sight unless i move, i do let this depend on the children and why they are going to the other room etc, also from my kitchen i can only see part of the conservatory and not the living room but again depending on the children i will move from room to room without expecting all to immediately follow.
