Hi

Today as we were leaving the house to collect a part-timer from school, we spotted a huge hedgehog zig zagging along the path, crossing the road - it was funny to watch. Anyway my 2.5yr mindee has been going on about hedgehogs all day.

So you brainy bunch ... give me some ideas what I can do next, suggest any books etc ????

You can leave food for them! We had a family of hedgehogs visiting last year and we left food out for them every night - think it was called Spikes or something which we got from Pets at Home. The minded children didn't get to see them as they fed at night but I took loads of photos and we discussed hibernation etc. They were all excited every morning running in to ask me if the hedgehogs had come for the food.

Oooh! We made hedgehogs today!!! Used a pine cone to be the hedgehog and stuck a paper circle on the front so mindees could draw face on. Used a small open box and glued on leaves, twigs etc that we collected last week. Glued pine cone hedgehog on top of leaves and it looks really cute!

You could also do a joint learning activity and learn about road safety with hedgehogs here

I have seen a lovely hedgehog made from beech nuts and a flower sponge (those green things they use to stick flowers into)

you cut the sponge into a hedgehog shape. Dip the ends of the beech nuts into glue and stick them into the sponge.
for the head you can glue on a piece of leave/paper over the sponge and draw/glue on a face and nose.

it looked really nice and I liked the fact that it uses natural materials.

Last Autumn we made hedgehogs. We did hand print ones (they were super cute) and also salt dough ones and clay ones with tooth picks for prickles. We made them "nests" using small boxes painted brown and lined with leaves, fluff and anything we could think of that would make the hedgehogs feel cosy and warm. We put the hedgehogs in the nests, the opening of the nest facing our way so he was all inside there. Parents loved it!

I read The prickly Hedgehog, Hedgehog Howdedoo, Hurry up Hedgehog (a lovely non fiction book for younger children) and also something like the Happy Hedgehog Band (it's not my own book so not sure of name). We did some hedgehog rhymes as well which I found on google, sorry haven't got them handy.

Happy Hedgehogging

Remember when people used to use half an orange and stick cocktail sticks into at buffets? You could do something like that for snack/lunch time.

When you take mindees out pick up dry leaves from the ground. Keep them and when you get back cut out shapes of hedgehogs and glue the leaves all over the body area and crayon eyes in x

How about Hedgehog bread? Take a ball of dough and flatten slightly, make a point at one end for the nose, cut into the body at an angle with scissors for the spikes and add currants for the eyes.
