PSED – talk with children about their favourite books. Let them choose from a selection and encourage them to respect the choices of others and listen to each book that is chosen, talking turns with lifting the flaps etc;

CLL – encourage children to tell the story in their own words. Use a brightly coloured picture book and ask them to tell you what is happening on each page. It doesn’t matter whether they tell the story or go way off beam... it’s about them feeling confident enough to contribute;

PSR&N - take a selection of books and ask children to set up a Library with them for role play. They can order the books however they like and might choose to do it by colour, size or shape or just higgledy piggeldy. It is interesting to see how different children do this and you can learn a lot about each child’s learning style from taking a back seat and observing this activity;

KUW – read a book like ‘Handa’s Surprise’ and take the children on a magical journey to the land where Handa lives. Use the internet (Google Earth) and a world map or atlas; find out about the animals in the story; look at the fruit and learn about each one using all the senses... a theme in itself!

PD - lots of fine motor control practice turning the pages of a book; for gross motor skills, you could act out the story in the garden. Eg if you were reading ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ (easy one!) you could make a bear hunt outside using clues and a stuffed bear... if you were reading ‘’Farmer Duck’ you could all pretend to be ducks and waddle around, singing duck songs... etc;

CD – draw / paint / create in dough some pictures from the story. Maybe children could choose to create of the main characters or one of their favourite scenes. At all times, praise the process as well as the end result and share with parents how much work went into the creation... take photographs to give to parents if children choose to use a medium which needs to be put away like playdough.

An interesting experiment - let the children choose a favourite story book, sit down together and tape yourself reading. Later, listen back and evaluate the activity. Think about who is doing the most speaking... which child is most verbal... who is disruptive maybe... who might be missing out... whether you are talking too much... how you listen to, value and acknowledge children when they make contributions etc. This activity can really change the way you read books with children – ‘with’, of course, being the key word... not ‘for’ or ‘to’ but ‘with’.

Enjoy! :D

Thanks for that Sarah. I had written this one down as we are doing a World theme next month. Obviously not done in quite as much detail as yours ;)
