View Full Version : Outside handwashing suggestions?

We have an outside toilet, which up until now has been full of junk as we used it as a store room. It's now been cleared, cleaned, painted & generally tarted up so it can be used for it's intended purpose!

It's going to be ideal for mindees to use when we're all outside as they'll be able to use it without us all having to come indoors (I mainly have younger ones who need me to help them going to the toilet, and even younger ones who I won't leave outside alone).

But, what about hand washing? There is a cold running tap, but it's just like an outside tap, not with a sink. The nearest sink is in the kitchen, but I don't think it would be practical/hygenic to have them all washing their hands in the kitchen sink.

So, I'm looking for ideas. A bowl of soapy water outside? A bowl in the kitchen? What would you do?

I have put a sink in my downstairs loo. It wasn't expensive and it's been a godsend to save children tramping upstairs.

Otherwise a small bowl that is emptied out (down the loo?) every time a child has used it, perhaps on a low shelf with soap and flannels (which can be put into a lidded bin for washing when used) so they can be independent.

ooh! what a good idea. I've got a downstairs loo but you should see the sink after we did mud pies outside then washed hands before lunch!

it doesnt say if it needs plumbing in or does it have a water tank to fill up , you can buy portable sinks for children our preschool has one ,

I have an outside loo with no hand washing - they probably were not bothered at the time it was built (house is victorian - loo is bit later I guess)

I am going to use a small plastic table and put a bowl on it, take liquid soap and a 2 litre bottle filled with warm water out and that's my hand washing facilities

Better than taking all the children inside when 1 needs the loo, although I will need to pour the water.

this one is much cheaper if it is mainly for handwashing - i just like the size of the argos one so they can play in it too:)

Ooh, I like that! I've got some outdoor grant money to spend, so will seriously consider this one. It would be great for indoors as well.

I like the idea of the wall sinks, but the tap in the outside toilet is in an awkward postition & I don't think I'd fit one of them in easily.

Thanks for all you ideas

Love the green fingers one. Might get one of those for the outside tap. I have just had a child size handwashing sink fitted in my utility room. It is tiny but does the job and has made life so much easier.

Is antibac hand gel any good? Ok for hygiene but not too useful on mud.
