Just thought I'd write a blow by blow account of my first inspection.

10am, Ofsted at the door, I opened it on the chain and stood in the doorway and had a really good look at her ID, invited her in and introduced her to my mindee and showed her where my certificate was and also told her where the fire exits were. Got her to sign my diary with name, time in, time out.

Took her into the living room where all my paperwork was arranged in piles and the rest was in the open lockable box on the dining room table.
She put her bag down on the floor and I asked her if it was OK if I put it behind the stairgate to stop J riffling through it.
My cat came in and I noticed that she flinched, so I asked her "Are you OK with cats", she said she was a bit nervous of them, so I put the cat upstairs in a bedroom.

She then settled down to look at the policies and J and I, went into the sun room to play with the toy kitchen and I just followed him around.
After a few minutes, J wanted to go out so I told Mrs O that we were going out to feed the chickens and we spent almost an hour out in the garden as it was so sunny and warm she loved the garden and the fact it was segregated with a green mesh fence and that there was a pond with a safety grid on it.

Mrs O kept going back in to get other bits of paperwork and she asked me basic questions, not even ones about EYFS as she could tell from my SEF (partialy completed) and my learning journeys that I had grasped how it all worked.
At around 11am, I changed J's nappy (wet) and she observed me using a glove, putting the nappy in a bag and wiping J's hands and then me wipping down the mat with anti-bac wipes, she also watched me washing my hands...in the kitchen! (she did ask why I did it there) I said, that I could see into the sun room, hallway and dining room from there and was safer, I also told her that any washing up was in a bowl and was not in the sink.

I then made J a snack of fruit (banana, mango and pineapple), wipes his hands with a wipe before he ate it and he sat at the little table.

J and I sat down to watch some cbeebies and she talked to me about some recomendations and some other questions about my policies and we then went upstairs to have a look in the bedroom used for sleeping, she also had a quick peek in the other bedrooms and my daughters tip!
She then asked me to sit next to her for the feedback, she mentioned the 17 areas and was saying good, good.. and then she said for the last 4 (gave a pause), you have outstanding!
I was so sure she was going to say satisfactory. I went bright red! :o

She then went on to say, she could not wait to get back to the office and tell all the others. When she left we shook hands and I said "I feel like a need to hug you" and she did :D
In total the inspection went on for 2hrs and 15 mins.

I was starving hungry by then!

Sorry but this really put me at ease, mine is due about 9.30am tomorrow and am ill (get ill every month doesnt affect minding just fuzzy head), to top it I have an ill teenager (think he just wants few days off) but good for me as he can keep dog calm and play with her upstairs during inspection.

I can say though I now officially hate EYFS paperwork have spent last 3 days tidying it all up so it looks presentable as often just have notes on odd bits of paper. I promise after this inspection I will be better organised but don't see alot of point considering I have 1 mindee who is an as and when child often for about 4 hour sessions and the one thing I really hate is that I cant take her to a group tomorrow and her and her mum realy appreciate that I take her to them so she can socialise

As my inspector said, they like it when everything is well presented and the main reason inspections can go on for ages is that the CM needs to find a piece of paperwork or the LJ's have not been put into a book.
I just had my master file of policies and the file I give to parents, then all the Risk assesments files, fire drill file with times/time taken and how it could be improved next time, my complaints/compliments file, the children's files, had a laminated A4 booklet of photos of the setting (just using printing on ordinary paper then stuck on some coloured card), included some witty comments such as:" I'm sticking to my work" (photo of child doing gluing), but then that's just my sense of humour :D .
Also included some leaflets on EYFS for parents. Of course she also looked at all my NCMA books on medicines/accidents and attendance.
Good paperwork seems to calm them down and lets you get on with showing how well you LOOK after the children

Thank you so much for your detailed account. It's really helpful as I'm due my inspection any time as well.

The only thing I'm not so happy about is the fact you said she went into all the bedrooms - you should see my older two children's bedrooms at the moment :panic: After much "persuasion" they started to sort through all their things so they could have a much tidier room, but have both got bored of it half way through and left boxes and all sorts stacked up all over the place. I keep going in there but just can't face it at the moment while I'm trying to make sure I've got everything ready for Mrs O!

I'm assuming that you didn't do a planned activity with J while she was there - just play led by him? Obviously this was acceptable so that's good to know!

Congratulations, I've just had my pre reg visit, its great to hear your account, I hope you dont mind but i saved it to use for helping to make my inspection musts list for things i need to work towards and the right things to remember. Knowing me nerves would leave me forgetting to make her sign the guest book!
Thanks for sharing.

Hi
Just read your account. Its so lovely to read a very positive inspection. We all spend so much time worrying about the dreded inspcetion. Well done, thats amazing. I hope I'm as calm as you seemed when I have my inspcetion.
:) Just out of curiosity, what grade did you give yourself on the SEF?

Ofsted don't need to go upstairs if you don't provide overnight care
I have found coming across confident is often best as they don't seem so intimidating I always welcome them with a smile and the offer of a coffee with explanation of where I feel is safe to leave cup etc. Last 2 inspections I have received overall good but they have found no faults this time I want an outstanding as feel I was cheated of that last time :p
