Anyone want to join me and the kids in seeing who can grow the biggest sunflower?

I thought if we all got a pack of sunflower seeds and got the kids involved in planting them together on the 19th April we can then have weekly / monthly updates?

We can show pictures - the kids will love it

Maybe you can also offer a small prize to whoever gets the biggest sunflower out of your children ?

You can also register here and get some free seeds

http://www.frostsgardencentres.co.uk/Centres/Sunflowers_for_Schools

Here is the application form for the free seeds

Ours are in already:rolleyes:

Remember sunflower plants don't like to have their roots disturbed. We are growing ours in cardboard tubes that can go directly into the ground when they are strong enough:D

We have just put " Childminder "
It will be a bit unfair if they do not let us join so fingers crossed

If not though the seeds are not expensive to buy

Thanks for the post, we are into 'gardening' big time this year. Will apply for seeds and hopefully join in the challenge. We have planted our pots. and sent for veg. seeds.

As a child all our veg were grown in the garden (i am old), i am happy that it seems to be revived, and i can now share the ethos with my littleones.

Can sun flowers grow in pots or do they need to spread their roots a distance to support themselves?

I bought some seeds the other day but haven't planted them, we are puppy sitting and he keeps digging everywhere, fresh compost would be runined in no time!

Our garden has dreadful soil/drainage and I was wondering if I could pop them in a window box by the fence.

We planted some yesterday but did them in those little brown pots that you can plant stright into the grown when they are ready to plant out. I've got them on the window sill in a little propagator.

I think I might do some more and put them straight into the soil. My garden has horrid soil though, I really struggle to grow things.
