Hi there

Just wondered if anyone could offer me any useful advice. Got a new parent coming in the morning who's 14 year old daughter has mild Aspergers. Just wondered what i should ask along with the usual stuff. Get so nervous when i have new parents round, won't be able to remember my name!

Oh good luck! Fingers crossed!

You could do with doing some research into Aspergers first...here's a good place to start...

http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=212

Aspergers is often considered 'eccentric' behaviour and many people with this condition also have problems communicating and socialising. You really want to find out from parents exactly what you will be dealing with and how typical the child's condition is, as there are many different variations.

Consider how you will manage a 14 year old who might go off and follow a cat on the way home; a teenager who might get very stroppy if you ask her to do something you think it fairly innocuous but she takes against... as I say though, lots of variations.

Think about behaviour for teenagers, ask parents how they deal with the worst times... that will give you an idea of what you will be looking at. You also need the full support of all those around you as there will probably be challenging times ahead -especially if the Aspergers is linked with other conditions, as it often is.

Hope this helps :D
