View Full Version : Child Led Risk Assessments

Pauline

I've made some little child led risk assessments, handy for allowing children to be involved in reviewing and discussing risks, helps them understand dangers and how best to deal with them.

Ideal to complete and then laminate and stick up during an activity to help generate discussion. :)

Feel free to use them provide they are just for your setting and not for sale etc.

Thank you for sharing, i have got a child friendly one for smaller children and it has pictures for non readers too, so they can look to see about keeping safe when out, but i like this one to get the older ones thinking from scratch for themselves.

hi.
im unable to see the link of your child led risk assesments i think because i am registered as a parent
anyway my question is risk assesments....do they have to be a form as in tick box or can you clearly write about the setting risks identified and how you plan to overcome them or avoid them. im struggling to find a form that covers everything i want to add. im writing some risk assesments for my mum who is in panic mode over paper work.
this is how i was planning to do it:
assesement of soft play centre
in the town we live we regularily walk to a local soft play centre it offers a reduced rate for childminders and is suitable for children aged 1 to 10. they have a small cafe and planty of seating the risks i have highlighted are;

the children are at risk of burns for the hot food or drink
the children could collide and cause injury to themselves
the tables are square children could bang their heads on them causing injury
etc

how i plan to prevent these risks;

keep hot drinks in centre of table- refrain from children playing near tables
ensure children are in an area suitable for their age
do you get the idea at the end i would have said the skills the child would gain from the experience therefore the benefits overcame the risks.

I have LA supplied RA for my home which is like a monthly checklist. I have RA for outings also. I do a general one for risks that will be present every time we go out such as getting in and out of car, crossing road, dogs etc. I then have a separate one for each place we visit such as parks, groups etc. if there are no additional risks to my general kind I just make a note of the place and sat no additional risks to show I have considered them. Children can also be guided to risk assess by sustained shared thinking with open ended questions such as what would happen? what if? why? where? what can you do?
Remember very young children still need to be supervised but without being 'held back' for fear of hurting or accidents

This may help

Each setting is different so your RA will be pertinent to your setting and cover the 'potential' risks in your home and when children are in your care.

All you need to do is write a format that is suitable to you and that you can update as often as necessary....a simple table will do

Did you have any help in doing RA when you trained to become a CM? that I am aware of that should be covered in the initial training package

I want to know how to fill in risk assessment forms and how to lay them out for child minding in the home and on outings,

Not sure how others do it ...I do a simple table with 4 columns: Risk, prevention, Action in an emergency and other actions

I risk assess all areas and have different sections
Car journeys
outings
walking
Stay and Play sessions
Shopping
parks and playgrounds
Medicine such as Epipens

I also RA each room and the garden

Whenever I want to update it is easy because it is a Word doc and date any amendements

Does that help?
