Hi all, I am thinking about completing the DHC and I've just spoke my childminding co-ordinator to find out about the course and she said that my local authority/surestart don't run that course anymore and it would be best for me to do an NVQ instead as the DHC cannot be used for any other type of childcare apart from childminding or nannying. However, I recently bumped into a childminder I know who has completed the DHC and she is now a teaching assistant and she said that once you have your Diploma you can move onto other things if you want to, I'm confused.
Also, I've just been looking through the mag that I get from surestart that is dated June 2009 and there is an article in it congratulating a group of childminders for completing their DHC and it says if you want to find out more about the next DHC course contact etc etc, even more confused.
I'm disappointed now as I really wanted to do it, whats everyones thoughts with regard to it, is it worth doing? :)

The DHC is 5 units - the first unit being the ICP. It is a level 3 qualification that is specific to homebased childcare (ie childmindng or nannying) but nevertheless its a level 3.
If you wanted to move onto other things the NVQ CCLD level 3 is more appropriate as a springboard.
I do think that the DHC is a good underpinning to the NVQ or other qualifications.

The DHC is being scrapped, to be replaced by a more transferable course (that covers nannies, preschools etc) - they're phasing out the old DHC and hoping, but not sure if it will be possible, to bring in the new course next year...... So it might be wise to wait for the new course..... As I understand it the content is possibly going to be much the same as the DHC and it's on the same level...... HTH

Ahh right, that makes sense then, thanks for that, will wait to see what they come up with and look at doing something else in the meantime. Thanks !! xx

The DHC is still going to be recognised under the new framework however some local authorities don't support it with funding

For those who currently hold a DHC or CCCP there is a new Cache qualfication coming out that will bring everyone into line, regardless of which setting you are in.
