they do have ratios to abide by

Yes they do have to have regulations on the numbers they have and it also depends upon the age of the children they have -so under 2s have to have a higher adult-child ratio than the over 2s.

Its all laid down in the EYFS:

For children under 2 in any early years group setting there must be AT LEAST one adult for every 3 children. At least 1 member of staff must hold a level 3 qualification and at least half of all other staff must hold a level 2. At least half the staff must have received specialist baby care training

Children aged 2 in any early years group setting there must be one member of staff for every 4 children - qualifications as above

Children aged 3 and over in any registered early years provision

Between 8am-4pm if qualified teacher/ level 6 qualified present - 1 adult to 13children

Other times or if no teacher present then 1 adult to 8 children - qualifications as above.

Not really and if they are not adhering to these guidelines they are breaking the rules of their Ofsted registration.

I don't see how they can be flexible at all and not have fixed session times. There's no way they'd be able to keep within their ratios if they've got children coming and going at different times of the day. It would certainly be very difficult to keep a check as to whether or not they were over their numbers with this arrangement.

We have a nursery here that takes bookings week by week and the staff get told their hours based on those bookings - hence there is a high turnover.

Parents are always pulling their children out and the childminders benefit big time.

Nurseries have a maximum number of children a day the same that we do its all dependant on size of setting. They will be given maximum numbers for each age group as well based round the size of the rooms.

Yes ratios the same as us depending on room size. In the nursery my daughter works it is baby room 0-2yrs 1 adult 3 children, toddler room 2-3yrs 1 adult to 4 children and pre-school 3-5yrs 1 adult to 8 children with at least one level 3 in each room.

So for a full day the rate is approx £3.50 per hour, can't see them making too much money from that by the time they have paid all of the staff minimum wage, plus their tax and ni, and all of the heating costs/activity costs etc!

Might be a way for childminders to get the fall out from it when they realise what a luxury a childminder would be for a broadly similar rate and a far more personal service.

The staff to child ratio's that people have said on here is correct as is the qualified staff referances.

As it is a very new nursery I am guesing they didnt have many children enroled before their opening day.

With this in mind I am guessing that is why they can be flexible as they are saying thet can be.

Just so you can compre nurseries, where I work we have
12 under 3 years - 1:3 staff ratio
3 years + 1:8 staff ratio.

We have 10 staff and all our staff are fully qualified with NVQ Level 3 or equilivant.

We also have 2 full time students are not in our staff ratios.

As well as this we have 3 members of management who are supernumery so if needed are there.

At lunchtime we have 4 memebers of staff who come in to help .
