21/12/06 Changes to the food safety laws

Some of you may have read the article in ‘Who Minds?’ about changes in the laws relating to food businesses. We have checked this out with the Northamptonshire Food Liaison Group who have confirmed that the regulations relating to childminders in this county remains unchanged: only those providing meals to more than six children are required to register with their local Environmental Health Department. Any childminder may register, it simply puts you on a database to receive their newsletter. Either way, childminders are classed as ‘low risk’ and would not normally be visited by an environmental health officer. To register, or ask any other questions, please contact your local Environmental Health Department. We would still advise childminders to gain the Certificate in Food Hygiene even though it’s not a legal requirement, the 1 day course is offered free and details can be found in your training manual.

As far as I am aware it varies from county to county and they can implement it what ever way they like. Whe I phone I was told you had to register it didn't mater how many children or even if you cooked. As soon as you open a pack lunch for one child you are a food premisis.

Thanks Marlene, wish I was in in Northampton! It does seem to continue to vary from county to county as to how the rules are being implemented by each Council.

Last I heard the NCMA were working with FSA & EH Depts to try to get a consistent approach nationwide introduced. But she told me they'd been working on it "for years" so whether they'll ever reach an agreement remains to be seen.

Thanks Marlene whish I had that to hand yesterday. Why can't things be standard in this country one rule for everybody its even different within councils so I don't think anyone knows its all too confusing. I think we should create a book of standards for them and Ofsted to follow with Standard one being that All inspectors should areveive the same information.

Our local authority have been telling me since last year we don't need to but I have heard through the grapevine they are telling network childminders to register!!!!!!
