Gordon Brown is proposing to reduce/abolish the childcare vouchers and tax credits and in place provide 2 year olds with free spaces. This will obviously affect both families and childminders greatly.

Everyone seems to be assuming that Gordon Brown will still be PM after the next general election  There's no guarantee any of his plans will be carried out. I've signed the petition though, just in case!

This is part of an email I was sent. It would at least help some people for a few more years and means nothing is going to happen straight away.

"The Government has announced plans to phase out childcare vouchers from April 2011, in favour of providing 10 hours a week of free childcare for 2 years olds. Parents who sign up for childcare vouchers before April 2011 will be able to continue to enjoy tax and NI savings until April 2015."

Just did DH and DS too

I don't understand this train of thought. He has got all the mums back to work and now taking away the ability to pay for it.

I don't understand it either. He seems to want to penalise people who are trying to work & support their families.
And why do 2 year olds need 10 hours of care a week anyway? I think 3 is quite young enough.

I too doubt he'll be in long enough to implement this, he's just shot himself in the foot with the type of people they were relying on for votes, oops!!

do you think it's a good idea to publish this link on netmums and mumsnet. I know we cm's get a bashing on there but at the end of the day I think a lot of mums would be interested.

I'm pretty sure I've already seen it on Netmums, but I can't find it now.

I'm confused - I'm going to a meeting next thurs about the implimentation of free places for 2 year olds in this area - available to childminders only for 12 hrs pw - I was under the impression that it was in place in some councils already - I hadn't realised that it was at the expence of those availing of the childcare element of tax credits and childcare vouchers/salary sacrifice.

As I say I'm confused - I suppose I should have realised that the money for these 2 year old free spaces would have to come from somewhere I just thought they were getting it from all the increased sly taxes they have levied on us over the years.
