I've been doing my obs in date order rather than under the different areas of learning and development but my coordinator wants me to change that and I can't get my head around doing it....... So I was thinking about trying something like this to get me started and wondered if it's any good or a waste of money?

I do like it but I can see that it does make sense to do them separately (spelt correctly  ) so you can track that you're supporting all the areas. I already write which are is supported/covered by the observation but she didn't feel that was good enough.....

When my son was at preschool he had a sheet which had targets the kids were to meet and each target was in a shape of a jigsaw piece - so all the targets made up a whole puzzle. When the children reached the targets the puzzle piece relating to it was coloured in (as wll as the obs they were doing). I wish there was something like that out there!

Your learning journey is for you and the parents and the children!

It is totally up to you how you present it! Ofsted do not give a hoot so long as it shows a progression...

Which you can do perfectly well in date order.

If it doesn't make sense to you any other way then leave it alone.

Your coordinator has no right to try and fix something that is not broken.

Oh they make me so cross :(

Once again these "co-ordinators" sit in their offices thinking up ways WE can work better!!

Hi i am new childminder and i brought this book (cheaper on ebay!) and to be honest, when i first stared using it i thought it was good, now 3 months down the line, i dont think it is that well set out (for me).

At the begining it has all the 6 areas opf learning and development broken down and explained very well and then each month it has the following sheets.

1 page for childs own work to be stuck in, wth areas of learning and development.

1 page for weekly obs, has 5 places for photos and then the days of the week where you write your obs and then circle the areas of learining they come under- however you have to put in the beggining of week date, which means you are doing 1 whole week of obs then nothing for the next 3 weeks of that month.

1 page where you put a photo of the child doing what your observing and then again you write up, what the child is doing in the photo. areas of learning and development, evaluation and then next steps. - only problem is if your doing an obs about somthing the child has said then you wont have a picture and it looks silly when you fill out this page.

It also has another page that i dont use! 6 Areas of learning broken down and then you write what stange the child is at and then the same 6 areas of learning and development boxes that you wrtie the childs next step in.

I struggled at the begining with obs and what you do and dont need to do, and this book really help me understand this. Now i understand it better i am doing it by myself.

Hope this helps

i brought this book when the EYFS first started, i took it with me to my information session and the lady running it said , it was good but was a bit to much, and we didnt need to do half as much as was set out in it ( not sure if ive made sence), i used it as a starting point, but now just use a ring binder that i can add stuff to as i want:laughing:

i do my ob's in date order, i do each one on a A4 sheet of paper, at the top of each sheet i write the main area it covers, then a photo, then write a few lines about the observation, under this i write the other areas it could cover, then next steps, dont know if i do it right????????, but it works for me, i prefer to do it in date order, but by looking at the heading i can clearly see which areas are being covered, IYSWIM.X

Listen to Sarah, not your coordinator.

You are happy with the system you use so stick with that - why waste your money on something you don't want or need?

This is similar to how I do mine but my obs sheet has sections where I can link it to the different areas of the EYFS. Works for me, so I am sticking to it!!

I just do a few words on the obs, next steps and then link it to eyfs at the bottom of the page saying which section it covers.

My inspector asked me how I knew I was covering all areas and I told her all I had to do was look at the bottom box and check. She was fine with that.

I could do a grid or something as well I guess (just to show I had all areas covered).

I don't know if this is remotely helpful to anybody else but here are some snaps I took of DD's learning journey that I brought home from nursery in July as she's now left and moved up to school. I am going to do something similar for mine.

There's not always a supporting photo for each observation but I thought it might help with the sorts of things you could write.

There is no need to do it in any one set way I do it in order of observation date and then link it with the area or area it fits with, Ofsted loved how I do it and gave me Outstanding so don't worry about the co-ordinator the one for my area has actually much less experience and lower qualifications than me although she is very supportive. Many co-ordinators have only learnt about EYFS by taking a few training sessions, so may well know less than the average childminder

Hi i sometimes use short observations with pictures, however we have got to note down about next steps moving the child on, Ofsted will ask for evidence of this, well they did with me anyway.

Hi, i bought that book when i was first registered before i had any mindees, just to get an idea how to set things out, it is very imformative at the front and explains well about what the EYFS is all about - good for parents who simlpy dont know. Ive had a lo for 11mth now and have just sent the book home with his nanna to show his mam, previously ive sent a photo album type book every 3mths to show what he,s been doing and his daily diary every day.
The pages that show all 6 areas for one week, ive choose one and wrote in detail to cover that area, then done a different one the next page. I found this very helpful and would recommend it, even if you just buy one an adapt your own from this. Not everyone can spell well xx

Don't know about the book as I've never used it.

But, my obs are in date order too and ofsted were fine with it. Since my inspection i have improved things (in my eyes) by also doing a tick and date chart of eyfs stages of L&D so I can see at a glance that they are all being met. This may work for you?
