View Full Version : HOURLY RATES OVER THE COUNTRY

NCMA recently did a survey and these were the results of the pay from the country. It was based on 100 people.

The mean hourly fee charged by NCMA members was £3.61 per child, up from £3.54 in 2008. Fees were highest in Greater London (£4.64) and the South East (£3.90) and lowest in the East Midlands (£3.14) and the West Midlands (£3.10).

A higher proportion of respondents than in 2008 indicated that their annual turnover was more than £7000 (53% in 2009, compared with 47% in 2008). Given that hours were broadly the same as in 2008, as were fees (after inflation), this might be accounted for by the slight increase in the average number of children being cared for by each childminder.

That is interesting :)

I live in the South East, and have done a bit of research. In my ward other CM's seem to be charging basic of £4 per hour. That sounds about right then.
I won't be charing that much when I start though, as obviously I will be a new CM.

don't undersell yourself. I did that then found it really hard to raise my rates. You should charge the average for your area.

I'm in the South East too too and the average in my area is £5 an hour - and it's slowly creeping up......

If you want to charge £4 an hour do it from the start as I did, its hard raising your rates afterwards, Personally I think £4 is a fair amount where ever you live judging by that survey and what others say.

I was charging £3 ph, same as I was getting in Herts 8 years ago. I've got a new mindee starting this month and have put my fees up to £3.25ph. I was just chatting to cm friend in Herts and she said it's £3.75 where she lives but £4ph for under 20 hours.

It's £5-£6 an hour here - & I'm not far from Twinkles -when I started 3 years ago it was £4-£5 an hour - then it stuck at £5 - then EYFS came in & now most charge nearer to £6 an hour.

The Juggler and Caroline L (couldn't quote you both in one go lol)..maybe I just will then after all!

I just didn't want to charge too much as I will only just be starting out.

There are about 20 roads in my ward..and I had a look at other CM's and they were all at least £4 p/h. I suppose if I charged less this may annoy other CM's as I will be under cutting them.
I also don't want to see too cheap compare to everyone else as it will make me look inexperienced and could put people off!

I might charge £4 for part time and then if I get full-timers do a bit of a discount. It is difficult to decide the right price, but I am spending out alot on doing up a Playroom and buying all new equipment, so need to make my money back somehow :D

I do think it is fair to charge more now the EYFS is in place, as CM's have a lot more work to do.

I agree , you won't make yourself popular if you undercut the other minders.

In the South West (Devon) I have been charging £3 an hour and have just started to increase my rate to £3.20 as contracts come up for renewal. This is my first increase in 2 years and I have already had a parent moan about it, the same parent turned up a few weeks later in a new car!

I charge £15 for a full day, and parents struggle with that.

Why do they struggle? If they are on a low income then Taz Credits pay most of it and if they earn too much then I think they are pulling the wool over your eyes.

I get £14 for after school per day per child

I thought I was cheap! That's half my price - full day to me is £30!
Why would the parents struggle to pay £15 a day (that's like £1.50 an hour!!) - surely if they are struggling they would be able to get TC to help pay most of the costs.
Some parents:rolleyes:

Thats potentially £1.50ph Oh my goodness. I think I'd go and get a paid job if I was on that rate.

How come they have a problem with paying that little? I bet you a chocker block and have a long waiting list. What do other minders around you charge?

I live in the se. I was charging £25pd when I started minding 15yrs ago and I didn't live in a very good area either. Now its £45 or £50pd depending on wether they do under or over 20hrs a week.

Where do you live?

i looked at cis before i set my rates , the two areas closest to me the cms charge £3.50 ish , so i though i'd do the same. but in my little village ( which is meant to be more affluent!) everyone else charges £3. so although i think im actually selling myself cheap theres no way as the newest cm i can charge more than the others. once im more established i may hint that we should all put our rate up at the same time!

Im starting as I mean to go on and charging £4.00 ph from the word go...I want provide a top quality service for my children and parents...if parents don't want to pay £4.00 an hour for MY service they can find another childminder!

I think as a new childminder coming into the "trade" that with all the paperwork we have to do I feel that we deserve to be paid resonable rates for the extra work...

If everyone charges a higher average ph soon enough it will be the norm...I think one of the ways to try and raise the profile of cm is learn not to undersell ourselves!!....looking after children is such an important job!!

(btw....I am in East midlands)

I was charging 3.75-4.00 but have decided for new starters it will be at least 4.50, as i feel that i have more work, never have the courage to ask for a raise and asking for holiday pay let alone bank holiday pay causes untold grief, so where I can I am going for £4.50- £5.00 per hour and depending on circs may include lunch in this!

I am in Greater London/South East and charge £5 per hour.

When I first started 2 years ago, I was £4.50. That seemed to be average for my area. I also figured that I could justify that amount as I had 14 yrs child care experience and a child care qualification.

I raised it last September when I had no children and parents on my books. That way, people that came from then on in were £5.

I was charging £3.50ph (£3.00ph for under 1's and eldest sibling) but have now put my rate up to £3.75ph for new parents.

I'm in East Anglia too but on the outskirts of P'borough also I am networked and accredited so I feel that for the work I have done to get on the network etc I should be able to charge the higher end of the scale.

Think I'll move South! I'm on a daily rate of £25 for full timers and £28.00 for part timers so for a 10 hour day thats between 2.50 and 2.80 ph!

If you do a full day of 8-6 do you still charge £30.00? maths doesn't add up there

I charge £3 an hour, this is average for my area and considers other childcare in the area, 3 nurseries within a mile!!!!

Ironically if you walk a mile either way it increases to £3.50 -£4.50, stupid goverment wording classes my area as underprivileged (sp) so it can put parents off even looking
