Just to warm everyone. A mindee friend of mine was researching on the net looking for craft activties for Fathers day and was looking for footprint crafts etc. She clicked on what she thought was a normal informative sight and a lot of porn came up. After looking at more there was a pattern in the link with US/ on them but there was LOADS....including 'apples for the teacher' site! Please be careful if you are doing this research with children present!

12 months ago I googled for florence Nightingale for DD's school project!

clicked on a link that had a green tick and picked up a virus that duplicated so much ... it played music on my pc and basically took over the hard drive.
no Porn but left me in a right mess and the hard drive was too infected to do anything with it.

just shows even simple searches are so unsafe.

Thanks for the warning hun.

I did a piece on the genetics of tomatoes when I was at university and needed a couple of photos of tomatoes to put into the presentation at the end. Typed in 'moneymaker, tomatoes' (Moneymaker is a type of tomato) and most of what I got pics of was porn! Unbelievable how dodgy a simple phrase can be...

Yes I have noticed this in the past

Its difficult to know until you click and see them so its prob best not to even use these sites with the kids around

Thanks Monkey for the warning

On our farm we keep pheasants for a shoot. DH was looking for something on the internet about feeders and equipment. He searched 'Game Birds'............you can guess what he got

Not so funny were the red lips that appeared on the desktop that we had trouble getting rid of. Didn't want kids clicking that:mad:

I never search for anything now with the children after googling 'pictures of firemen'!

We wanted pictures to print off & colour in, but that certainly wasn't what we got

Thanks for the warning.

One of the things my mindees like doing is searching for colouring pictures. I've never even thought that we might get something else instead. Will be much more careful now.

I remember a few years ago, there was a piece on TV about kids accidentally accessing porn sites.
One little chap was doing a project at school on "Big Ben"

ooooh!!! What did you get!!!

Seriously though, I was thinking about this yesterday as my son loves watching Hamtaro (a cartoon hamster from Japan) and I have left him on youtube to watch lots of fan made vids. But I was concerned that he might accidently click on something he shouldn't as every time he clicks on a vid to watch, when it comes up theres a whole new set of 'related' vids. Yesterday he ended up watching a vid with a real pet hamster in it doing funny stuff, which is fine, but I did wonder how many clicks away to something dodgy!

Are there any parental controls on youtube?

theres also recently been a major attack on youtube - people 'demonstrating' their distate of youtube deleteing illegal music files by uploading seriously graphic porn - millions at a time and then at the same time the same group of people are putting it as a fav. video so it gets a high ranking  a lot of these videos start out as hannah montana etc and then turn into the porn - so i'd keep the kids off youtube for a while as well1 :(

My mum designs embroidery patterns and if I ever forget what her web-site address is or if want to find her stuff elsewhere on the net I type in her name and search for it................however searching for Mrs Leather (which really is her name!) has lead me down a few dodgy paths over the years!!

ooh, thanks for that. Better keep my son off youtube then! He will be disappointed though. Such a shame a group of people have to ruin it for everyone else. The vids my son has been watching are so harmless!

I never realised that this could happen.

Don't think I've ever looked for anything and got anything dodgy come up like that. I will see if I can find some now! Ha ha!

My daughter is performing in a ballet called 'naughty daughters' it's an old famous ballet apparently.I thought it would be useful to google the story, which I did with my 12 and 14 year old daughters present,I think you can imagine what pictures came up!!!! it led to a very interesting conversation and a lesson learnt.

Same here when I wanted some colouring pictures/photos of nurses for a Drs Surgery I was setting up in the role play corner. Those were not the type of nurses I thought were suitable for the playroom wall!!!

Will have to watch DD on YouTube as she likes watching the Animal Crossing videos.
