Reading some of the post I am getting a bit confused with these too.

Deposit: money to keep a place which will be used to pay the first week or month, but not refunded if the child doesnt take the place

Retainer: an amount given until the child start , but do you give the money back?

I do deposit to hold a place if the child isn't starting straight away.

I don't charge a retainer but these can be charged to hold a space for a child you already have, so a term time only child could pay a retainer in the holidays.

Hi all

Talking of retainers...

Ive had an enquiry from a teacher that doesnt like the idea of a retainer fee!!

If i charge only 1/2 fee which is £12 for a school pickup/drop off so £6 for a retainer fee just for the half term and whit hols etc but NOT the summer hols am I being fair do you think?
