Hi All

I've had the following request from Siobhan, a free-lance writer:

Hello,
I'm writing a feature on healthy eating and the diets of preschoolers for
Child Care magazine and I would like to canvass the opinion of any
childminders on the forum. There have been a number of reports in recent
months that suggest preschool diets and habits are even more important than
those at school. The government has introduced stringent nutritional
guidelines for food served in schools, but there are no such guidelines for
nurseries or those looking after preschool children. I would like to know
what childminders think about this. Should there be legislation about the
food you serve the children in your care or would you think it insulting?
With paperwork already an issue for lots of childminders, would food based
legislation be the last straw, or would you welcome something that
encouraged children to eat more healthily at a younger age? And where do
parents fit in to the picture?
I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts. If you get in touch I can
email you some questions to answer. It would all be very straight forward.
Many thanks.
Kind regards,
Siobhan.

If anyone would like to contact Siobhan about the above, you can email her here:

that will be a fascinating read!

I only provide cold meals so not sure if I can help other than to express the fact that I do not want to be told what I can and can not feed the children BUT would like to see ideas, different meal suggestions, portion size recomentadations without being forced to follow a strict guideline.

Yes, I got a reply just saying thanks and she would collate info etc, but her baby was due in days, so I guess she is on mat leave for a while. Look forward to hearing her report.

Just checked, I didn't hear back after I had sent my info, she said all that in her initial e-mail:blush: I still guess she's busy with baby though.

I got an e-mail from her with the questions but she did say baby due in days. Then I didn't reply for a week or so due to studies. I guess she is enjoying maternity leave now.

I too replied to all of her questions, and after checking that she got it she replied yes and was going to be going through all of them at some point.

Will definitely be interested in her report, and her take on our replies!

Just had this message from Siobhan:

I wondered if you could just put a note up on the forum thanking people again for their interest and all their help with the feature. Several took a great deal of time to answer extremely thoroughly for which I was very grateful as I know how busy they are.
Their responses were really interesting and very helpful and I wished I had more space to include a lot more than I was able to. And I'll be glad to come back and
talk to them again should I write another childminding feature. A friend of
mine wrote a feature in the Guardian this week about the EYFS and how it's driving more and more people from childminding, so I know the pressure they are under and I hope my speculation about the nutrient standards is nothing more than that.
Anyway, if people want to see it, the issue is out now, and my thanks again to you and the members of your fab forum for all your help.

I don't have trouble with my writing skills, but i think i need to learn to read, cos i was most surprised it was in Childcare magazine, and it is just this minute reading the top of this thread that i can see it clearly says where it was going to be!!
