Smoke Alarms

Hi

I am in the process of registering and have been visited by the Fire Service. They told me that I needed a mains operated smoke alarm for every room in the house. Is this normal practice? If this is the case this is going to be very costly! Any suggestions?

That sounds like a lot. I have 3 at different levels but they are placed where the smoke spirals too.
