During my inspection today the inspector noted that I test my alarms once a month and said to not quote her but she was sure she had read it somewhere that it will change to once a wk if battery operated. Anyone heard anything about this?

i was told this that they should be tested once a week, as batteries run out

Yes

It is considered to be good practice to test the alarm every week

I had to have 2 mains operated smoke alarms fitted as they said battery operated ones weren't enough!

If you contact your local Fire Brigade they can do a free safety checks around your hom and give you advice about planning your exits etc. They (not OFSTED) are the experts in this and who better to go but the horses mouth.

Just a pointer though - (my brother is a fireman and done my safety check although I hadn't asked him) - you should have at least TWO smoke alarms, one downstairs and one upstairs.

Do you know where to break the glass on your double glazed windows/safety windows (ie the weakest point?), etc....

I test mine once a week, always have done it and keep a record.

As we have an attic bedroom we also have a smoke alarm on this level too.

Lucky me has to have 4. Cellar, ground floor, 1st floor and attic rooms.
I also use the sausages method but my husband prefers to use toast.

The children now know that when the smoke alarm goes of dinner is ready - 7 yr old runs through the house announcing the advent of well done wotever. :D Bless I could happily "crown" him (as my mum would say). especially when I am trying to get the still edible but crispy food out of the oven, open all the doors, flap my tea towel and reset the alarm (that is linked to our intruder/security alarm complete with response phone call)

Think like everything it depends on your inspector. I have been told Iam fine with battery operated ones but a friend was told she needed the other type when providing overnight care

I agree with Kate - what you are told depends on your inspector!

What is the weakest point then to break safety glass Vik 'cos I have no idea

Mine is run off the mains too. It was a condition of Building Regs when we had our loft conversion a few years ago.
