I'm feeling rather sad now but what an awsome experience, its a shame i didnt do it on friday when I had mindees here but it scared me to release them with so many hands and feet, one of the butterflies took a good 20 minutes to decide to fly and stay safely off the patio.

It's fab isn't it? You did well to get so many.

We did them a couple of years ago & only got 3 butterflies. We did have 6 caterpillars, but 3 of them went into their cocoons first & the other three knocked them down & ate them!
I was really surprised (as well as disappointed & disgusted!), but the kids loved it!

Last year I planted a few nasturtium seeds in my garden... I was quite proud that they all grew really well, they then took over my garden and flowered everywhere. It was very pretty, although they strangled and overpowered every other flower or plant in their way... Then the butterflies came. Ten plus a day every day for a month, all cabbage whites... Then we noticed the eggs, and the tiny, tiny catapillars... there were thousands of them! There were 50-100 on every nasturtium plant in the garden, and I had about 20 plants of varying sizes. the catapillars grew and grew, and ate every single nasturtium plant! The other types of plants finally got to grow and by this time the catapillars were well fed and getting ready for their big nap so they left all the other plants alone. I wish I had taken some pics because every inch of my garden had cocoons, they were hidden under window sils, under the table and chairs, the roof of the shed, everywhere!

So to cut a long story short, I will be happy if I never see another catapillar again. And there will be no nasturtiums this year either!

I'm still pre-reg so the only child that got to enjoy it was 4yo ds1, who spent most days trying to count how many butterflies there were, then eggs, then how many catapillars, then cocoons, then butterflies again.

We are growing veg this year too, so if I see a butterfly unfortunatly it will be getting chased with a tennis racket

indoors

it is recomended that you keep them in a warm area out of direct sunlight but a cool room is fine they just take a little longer to transform.

mine were on a low coffee table by patio doors so children could see, suprisingly enough they were all so gentle when looking though the littlest one did try and carry the net bless her.

it was sad to let them go but I'm so pleased .... I'm useless at growing things even my tomato plants which are sposed to be easy didnt seem to grow too well. think I started them off to early. But butterflies i managed to keep them alive yay!

hi how long did yours take to emerge as butterflies, i been waiting for mine for over a week now

11 days once the cocoons were fully formed.

They will go every dark in colour almost black then the following that it will happen but its fast so keep an eye out ... it takes about 3 seconds tof a butterfly to emerge then 2 hours roughly for them to open their wings discharge the exess blood and then start moving around.

Baby wipes are a good idea to keep ready to wipe the dischrage off the netting from the outside only though.

I have had to take a deep breath after seeing them

I wish I would not have looked at this thread now

They are my worst nightmare and even worse than floaters ( that is another story and just not what you may be thinking )

They are sooooooooooo horrible and look at the hairy body

Yuk yuk yuk yuk yuk

Floaters = my own name for them horrible daddy long legs or dragon flies whatever you want to call them - they are horrible and come out around August - they seem to float everywhere, in the grass , up the wall, on us horrible horrible horrible I am scared of these a lot and everyone here thinks its really funny

Butterflies well I sceam if I see one - hubby gets annoyed because if one flies at my head when we are out I just scream and he shouts at me and says i show him up haha
I am sure they follow me and I have almost broke my wrist, and my toe and foot through running away from them in the past
Last year I shut the dogs head in the door because I ran away from one and the dog thought I was playing I shut the door not realising or caring to be honest if she was there ha ha

Mandy - aj is also scared of butterflies so she knows how I feel

I'm cant handle daddylonglegs

when I was preggy I was soaking in the bath with the bathroom window open, tuns of them came in .. well 3 but seemed like tuns .. I couldnt move i screamed and screamed ... my Hubby panicked as I couldnt tell him what was wrong. He called 999 then once I had calmed down he realised it was the daddylonglegs that had freaked me out ... yes we got a telling off from the emergency team but from my Hubbys point of view i was in great pain and it scared him too.

I cant handle flying ants either .. luckily they only hang around for 2 days but even so they are just awful
