I may have a child starting soon who has a peanut allergy.

If you have a child with an allergy is there any paperwork that you do?

I will speak to the parent's to find out what they do at home but just wanting to make sure that I'm doing the paperwork side of it right to make my home as safe as possible.

my mindee has an allergy but they are not quite sure what it is

He currently can't eat fruit, he had tests last week but all come back clear

we use a book and i write down everything i give him to eat. We are going to start reintroducing fruit to his diet. Its been a nightmare not giving him fruit to be honest as he's only 2, and we love fruit here!!

I'm not sure myself if there is any other paperwork to do..... we have filled out a massive allergy page tho, which i designed. just to help us see.

You need to find out how severe the allergy is.

It may be so severe that the child has to have an Epi-pen in case which means you would need specialist training and would need paperwork for it such as permission to adminster forms etc.

You would also need to consider warning other people of the allergy too because if the allergy is really bad the child could have a reaction if they have come into contact with another person who had eaten peanuts etc.

Thanks. He has an epipen which I've had training in but need to do it again as the allergy centre said it was good practice to renew the training yearly if you have a child in your care who needs to use one.

Hi Helen

Agree with deeb66 about making sure you find out how severe the allergy is, and getting a form signed for permission to administer his epipen if necessary.

Personally I would be recording what the child has eaten and making sure I read the backs of food packets for anything that mentions it contains nuts, might contain traces of nuts or was made in a factory that also makes things containing them.

My son has a peanut allergy but luckily it isn't severe enough for him to need an epipen. If he comes into contact with peanuts he comes out in a rash, develops cold-like symptoms and vomits but fortunately he's never had a full blown attack. A dose of Piriton sorts him out.

We always read the backs of packs of things he is going to eat, and we still have peanut butter in the house but I keep it high up out of his reach. He's very aware about things though and if he's not had something before he'll always ask if there's nuts in it (which I think is quite good for a 6yo!)
