Personally I would put a stair gate on the second step, or at the bottom of the main stair case, and a window lock on the window.

When Ofsted came to do my Pre - Reg I said that I would be putting stair-gates up, and she said that they were not worried if you had them or not as long as you had risk assessed it.

If you were prepared to put a block of wood (you could paint it white to fit in) on the top of the left stair post then you should be able to fit a roller blind type of gate. the clips would fit top and bottom on the right hand side and the blind on the left.

The advantage is that it rolls out of the way when your'e not using it. Here is the link to have a look.

Yes they are quite expensive but mine has lasted a long time and I love the way it rolls back out of the way.

It may be worth doing as search for them John Lewis may not be the cheapest, I just knew I could find the info on them for you there.

I can't fit a stair gate on my stairs either, so I have, like you said, put a stair gate in the hall way just before the stairs instead. I have found this better actually as it also prevents access to the front door, meaning if I ever accidentally leave the keys in the lock, I will have no escapees and also, I can answer the door without lots of little faces crowded round me to see who it is!

I had a similar problem and I put the gate up onto the second step.
my care commission officer said that that was fine.
I had to also use a pressure gate as the wall is made so solid that we couldn't drill into it further than an inch or so...

we're making our own wood gate!!! went to the timber yard, have piece of wood, just need to buy hinges, et voila a cheap gate wood only cost a couple of quids and hinges can't be thet bad!!!! I don't want any bars as my dd is obsessed with putting her feet everywhere and climbing everything and no way i can afford a rolling thiny.

I recommend a roller blind gate. They are fantastic and can be fixed at an angle.

I have one between my kitchen diner as the space is too wide for a stair gate, so simple and I love the way it tucks neatly out of sight when not in use.

Well worth every penny. It's cheaper here though http://www.kiddicare.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productdisplayA_62_10751_-1_14054_3072_10001_14054

Try ebay too for the Lascal roller gate, they are great, and well worth the money, I paid far less than £64.99 for mine, it was less than £40 with postage off ebay.

I cant fit a stairgate across my stairs either so I have my gate across the lounge doorway where the children play.
At my inspection in January the inspector was more than happy:)

I have a kiddiguard roller gate too, its at the top of the stairs because it isn't needed that often and hides nicely when not in use.

I got it off freecycle.

I also have my gate on the second step with extenders as our stairs are quite wide so a standard gate wouldn't fit.
