I teach the children each year the poem by AA Milne - Daffadowndilly and we make up actions to it.

I haven't got the book in front of me so am writing this from memory

She wore her yellow sun bonnet
She wore her greenest gown
She turned to the south wind and curtesyed up and down
She turned to the sunlight and shook her yellow head
and whispered to her neighbour
"Winter is Dead"


we also paint an individual cup part of cardboard egg box - yellow or orange with a few yellow petals of crepe or tissue paper behind and stick it on a lolly stick painted green - good as mother's day or easter craft

primroses are easy to make aswell - 5 yellow hearts put in a circle with a little orange pen in the centre

Have fun - sorry it's not an on-line link - quite often use the dklt or dlkt something like that site - just type in kids spring colouring or craft and it will be probably come up as a listing - generally has colouring, craft, poems or songs on to - also the CBeebies site may have something - we have been doing a weather topic and they had 2 great interactive weather games - little childrens first hands on experience with ICT.

Some of my own ideas

Mathematical Development

• We have lots of rain in the spring time. Let the children

experiment with cups, jugs etc filling and emptying them

with water. Ask questions like “How many cups of water

fill the plastic bottle?” and “How many cups can you fill

from one jug of water?”

• Outside, look for signs of spring. Count how many

crocuses or daffodils you can see.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

• Spring time is a time for new growth. Think about planting

some seeds and talk about how to look after them.

.Do we need to wear less clothes - why ?

Physical Development

• Practise keeping warm outside if it is a bit chilly still e.g. running,

clapping, stamping feet.

• Draw the four seasons’ pictures, ensuring correct pencil grip

and encourage careful colouring.

Creative Development

• Talk about colours associated with each season and choose

particular colours for painting pictures e.g. a spring picture

introduce yellow

• Read “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” by Eric Carle. Explain

how butterflies have lovely colourful patterns. Paint some

beautiful butterflies



Tulip Hands
Pink or Purple Paint
Green Paint
White or Light Blue Paper
Paint Brush

Paint the child’s hand with the pink or purple paint. Paint their arm with the green paint. Holding the fingers closed have the child lay there hand and arm on the paper to create a Tulip.

I have a nice idea that you could use as part of a wall display

Brown paint to make tree trunks and get the children to make hand prints with different shades of green for the leaves.
Hand prints under the trees of reds and pinks to make pretty spring flowers
