if you don't want to use the 'new post' option there are various icons around the forum to show where there are new threads and posts:
if a sub forum has new posts the little file icon will be coloured yellow, so if it's not then you know there are no new posts since your last visit.
A choice of icons in the left column tell you whether a thread or board has new posts, whether you have posted in the thread or if there are no new posts (see the key at the bottom left of the forum (e.g. two sheets with orange background = new posts)
once in a particular section the threads you have not read or those with new posts will be bold, those without new posts will not.
