Ok i've just made the salt dough so that the children can model it this afternoon & let it dry ready for painting next week (mindee not back till next week).

How long does it take to dry? I know some people put it in the oven but i thought that it would be more prone to cracking.

Depends on the thickness of the model but it does take a while - if you don't want it until next week that will be fine.

If you put it in the oven you need to put it on a very low temp and then leave it in there for a few hours and let it cool down in the oven.

Hi
Not sure, sorry.
But I know if I don't wrap it up properly it goes a bit crystaly (due to the salt) I'd be tempted to use the oven on a low heat, like meringues!:D

mine is currently on papertowels on a play tray up high, I turned them over today as the side that was getting the air has gone really hard already! The website I used said 48 hours, we will paint them next week too
