Sorry, still new to childminding and observations let alone EYFS!!!! Ok my mindee is 12 months old, today was the 1st day I heard her say 'nana' for banana and she pointed to it and got all excited!! do I record this as an observation, not really sure as not an 'activity'?????

I would document that, especially her excitement!
You could put the observation under communication, language and literacy - definitely uttering a single word!
With my little ones I keep a note of new words that I hear, at the back of their daily diary -parents seem to like it.

It doesn't have to be an activity to make an observation.

An observation can be anything - new words, moving in a new way, taking an interest in something etc.

Anything that makes you go wow! :D
