Hiya, I am due to return to Childminding in March when my maternity leave runs out, and its just hit me that I need to get sorted!
Washing is piling up now that we have a child of our own, and we already have a house full of childminding toys and equipment, and with Christmas we now have even more things to try to find a place for!

We have just got a dishwasher so that will help with the washing up, and Im going to try to keep up with the clothes washing and putting away as soon as dry.

I just wondered what toys you have, how you store them, and what toys you think are the most important to have for all ages etc. And do you have any handy tips?

We have:
duplo, soft toys and rattles, books, shape sorters, stacking toys, pretend kitchen and pretend food and pretend microwave and washing machine, cars and a car mat and garage, puzzles, jigsaws, dressing up clothes, paint/playdough/colouring/cornflour etc. pretend tool kit, farm animals and wooden farm, bricks, stickle bricks, musical toys, treasure basket, little people and power rangers etc. plus a few other things like shopping trolley and basket, eggs, music mat etc.

We have a unit from Ikea where I put plastic baskets in with toys, and a bookcase where a few more boxes and books go, then in the conservatory we have a small cheap toy storage unit from Argos, and a big tub for cars, then the other bits are just on the floor.

It'd be quicker to list what toys we dont have

Its taken over so much I have managed to convince DH we dont need a dining rom and have converted it to a playroom :clapping:

I have argos storage (a bit like the trofast stuff) and other than that I use clear boxes. I use the sideboard for games and puzzles and have a rail for dressing up. I also have a set of small shelves with open boxes on for kids to access stuff freely.

I also have posession of the shed so store a load of stuff in there and rotate it.

I don't have the luxury of a playroom just yet but I am working on it! I have a tall bookcase in the kitchen with the stuff we use everyday and I have a fair amount of storage in my utility room. DH has a storage unit for his work tools and I have kind of taken over that. I rotate boxes every 3/4 weeks and that works well for me

I have most of mine in plastic crates in the garage which I rotate every now and again. I also have basic toy boxes relevant to the ages of the children I have at the time indoors and then I cupboard full of craft, paint and puzzles.

My hubby is threatening to ditch the lot as to quote "you have too much and I don't think other people have this much crap"! Does this sound familiar!!!

annie, allthat argos stuff looks great am looking at getting hubby to make something like the last 2 links out of MDF cos he wont let me spend that much

how sturdy are the plastic sets of drawers cos would like a couple of them

my problem seems to be all the big toys like the garage and a dinosaur rollaround toy, they just take up too much room but if i had a wooden unit thats still quite los maybe they could sit on top of it

Very lucky my hubbie is a carpenter so he's made most of my storage for me.

I give him a drawing of what I want to hold boxes, similar to the argos ones and he makes them.

Bit of nagging needed but makes them in the end.

Im glad Im not the only one who has a moaning partner about all the toys. Its really hard as you want your home to remain a home and for your husbands/partners to feel like it is their home, but you also work from home and want to have everything that you need!

Maybe I should stop thinking about what else I can cram into the rooms downstairs, and start having Max's toys in his bedroom, and then I can rotate them. Didnt think about rotating the toys!

Does anyone have any ideas of good toys etc. to get?

I was thinking of getting a cheap blow up paddling pool to fill with our plastic balls, and a pop up tent.

Our cars have always been a hit with all ages - that has been our best buy.

Maybe I could put some toys in the loft and rotate them once a month - do you think they would be ok in boxes in the loft, or would they get damp?

Hum, My stuff is everywhere!!i have 2 of those plastic 3 draw argos ones. They are under the stairs with bits in. I used the shoes boxes to seperate some of the craft stuff on top of kitchen cuboards. It all started in a cuboard and now has over taken that, the top of my fridge and cuboards!!

I got this from argos

Storage was my biggest problem too. Especially when my own kids are 16 and 24 so we dont want to see toys equipment at the weekend.
Couldnt afford an extension so I bought a childrens cottage shed. Put an ottoman storage unit in with space underneath for 2 storage boxes and a solid pine 2 x 2 multi toy unit on wheels next to it. So in the week the children can play in it and on a friday night it takes me 10 mins max to put highchairs, equip etc and toys all away and my home is then toy free. The cottage down the garden doesnt look an eyesore either. Best thing I ever bought.

Sounds very familiar!!!!

My trouble is I never throw anything away, keep buying more and then wonder where I'm going to put it.

Sometimes think the whole house will disappear under childminding stuff

Wow Louise - you have alot of stuff:)

I dont think we have room for a cottage at end of the garden - but a great idea!

Think I need to clear out under the stairs and get some stuff under there!

Carol

My cottage is only a little shed I can only just stand in it and I am 5 foot 2.
But it does a great job. Only cost about 150 pounds so a lot better than an extension.

I have spent the last few weeks watching what the children actually play with...

Now it's the holidays I'm having a massive sort and clear out!

I've got some baskets and done new labels and I'm just keeping play sets that are complete, in best condition and used.

It's very therapeutic :D

I have just bought some of these, some for my kids rooms and one for the playroom. It can lie longways too which is how I have it and you can buy canvas, plastic or wicker baskets to go in them and the boxes hold loads. It comes in 3 colours too and is really sturdy. You can also buy proper cupboard doors and drawers fo it, very versatile:)

i too have had the' you got to much stuff' speach but then every time we go to the sales or a boot sale he spots somthing and says wouldn't that be good for the little ones!!!
I have a double cupboard upstairs which holds lots of stuff when its not being played with, i have a shed in the garden bought specialy for buggys, highchairs etc and also bought a shed from b&q for £100 which is a play 'house' when the weather is good and stores lots of stuff like kitchens and work benchs for the winter.
in the living room we have a book case for the books and one of those 6 tub wooden units from argos which we store stuff in in tubs and also have board games stored on top ofit, i then have a small space under the stairs for toys and also a 3 tier plastic draw unit which has different bits in. i rotate weekly as i find the children get board with the same stuff all the time.
i have tried to cut down on our stuff but its not easy as my kids are only 8 and 10 so still have their toys aswell although most of theirs they now keep and play with in thier rooms.
I do keep trying to cut down even more but each time i look at the item and think i might need it in the future for a different child!
I am hoping to save up for a conservatory which will act as a playroom but as my parnter is in the building trade his job isnt certain so you can garuntee that as soon as i save some money he will be out of work and we will have to use it!

LOL!!

my DH always says i have too many toys too! and i am ruthless, i don't keep anything i don't like, or have doubles of/similar items, it has to be good quality too! but i like to have enough stuff! at the moment the youngest i mind is 20mths ... goodness knows when i will next mind a baby, but i can't bring myself to get rid of 2 boxes of baby toys! i've tried to reduce it to one, but i can't! its like the puzzles ... i have so many, but they range from really simple 3 or 4 shape lift out ones, all the way through, to 250 piece puzzles! so i always have a puzzle exactly right stage for a child!

i have built in cupboards the whole wall of playroom, full of labelled boxes, (and craft stuff that needs sorting!) 3 shelves-2 with books, top shelf for all the pen/crayon pots etc. sitting room has the library books box. spare room has big box of dressing up, and about to gain large box of wooden train stuff that DS doesn't want in his room any more! Ds has vast quantities of lego in his room, and DD has 2 boxes of duplo in her room! (plus they both have their own toys that are not for general use by everyone!)

i am wandering around the house trying to work out where to put all my childrens new toys!!!

happy new year everyone!

Just started bringing big duplo boxes and baby toys down from loft room ready for next week - been hidden for Christmas. :D

I have 2 pine toy cupboards in the chimney alcoves in my sitting room. Shelves inside. 1 cupboard has puzzles, games, lacing, threading etc toys. Other has 6 large boxes - cars, plastic animals, craft, wooden bricks + cars, plastic food etc. Still overflows but most can be shut off at the end of the day.( My kids are older so don't want to look at it all!)

Bought a low pine bookcase recently to keep the LO's books on that matches rest of furniture in the room.

Big plastic stuff (garage, castle etc) stored in shed and brought in when needed or requested.

Might have a conservatory done, in which case it will be planned with storage in mind! Also a new shed/cabin in the future :D :D

we have the Argos units too, although the last ones we bought have been poorer quality and the wheels fall off. I have them in the kids bed room aswell for all their clothes, we have a 3x3 which is high enough to use the top as a changing table and a 2x2 where we put out ds horby train set that is on a large piece of chip board. Heres a pic of our back room. I can pile a lot of it up behind the curtains and close it off but with having 3 young children of my own that doesn't happen too often.

(The bright reflection is one of those yellow reflective tops on the clothes rail)

Ive had a recent clear out.

My friend who is also a childminder came over and helped (then I helped her) it was easier to part with stuff when someone else was there saying "do you REALLY need 4 shape sorters!?"

Also it is easier for the children to access toys and resources when there isn't a risk of avalanche every time they reach for something.

If the children have access to toddler groups, childminder drop-ins and other social/play experiences they don't need boxes and boxes and boxes of toys. We all do it though lol

I want a clothes rail for dressing up clothes but have read thr reviews which say they can fall over mine are in a storage box in the above and don't get used much.

My painting things are in my top kitchen cupboard out of reach.
Would love a unit to put crayons pencils stencils paper ect out as easy access instead i just put a selection onto the table each day.

I have done the same with the argos units - 2x3 on bottom and then 2x2 on top - in the higher part of the unit I put the things I don't want tiny ones to get hold of, ie puzzles/games with small pieces and books with paper pages (hate books being ripped :panic:) !

Have decided that I am not bringing anymore boxes of toys back in, just going to rotate them more often!! June and I share toys/equipment and have a large shed at the bottom of her garden which is bursting at the seams with toys so once a month or so I am going to have a swap around!

(Second one down) for soft toys and one for dolls and their clothes. Then i have a pop up bucket for dressing up clothes. All my borad games and big jigsaws so on top of cupboards in kitchen cos ceiling quite high so lots of room and out of babies way. Have a cupboard in hallway for arts and crafts things. And a garage full of bits and bobs. DP goes mad cos he has to sit in middle of a toy factory as he calls it. Last year I invested in an 8x6 shed and had a big sort. I have most toys in plastic boxes, labelled with words and a picture ,that impressed OFSTED! but she said it would be even better to put the name of the toy in a foreign language as well as english so thats my next project!! I invested in Really Useful boxes they a oblong, no sloping sides, and you can get ones which open at the front so you dont have to unstack the pile every time.

I keep 3 or4 boxes on the bottom shelf of the book case of our sitting room and rotate, paints, play dough, overalls etc are on a shelf in the kitchen, i have a three drawer chest in the hall for paper colouring books and all required markers.

A selection of books and age appropriate games are also kept on the bookshelf so the children can reach them. Extras are kept in the shed or attic and rotated

A friend has taken photos of all her resourses and put them in an album along with photos of the children playing and on walks and on local visits, she has arranged them in alphabetical order. It is an amazing record of all her resourses and the activities she does she has found she rotates things better because the children love iooking at the album and ask for things and it is fantastic to show new parents as it gives a fantastic view of what she provides and does with the children day to day. Should keep OFSED happy as well. My friend assured me that it ony took her one Sunday of hard work to take all the photos! and of course she now adds stuff as she goes along.

Another project to complete in 2009!!!!!!!!
