For now, Marlene, just keep a very simple note of what goes out and what goes in... include everything you spend, including on food, drink, outings, magazines, toys, books .... all the stuff you buy for the children...

Do you have the NCMA accounts book? I understand that's not too complicated to work with...

A course is a great idea! I wonder if the local college might run something? :D

Hi

Oh i'm terrible too at accounts, and book keeping! (you should see them)

The ncma accounts book is great, you just write down all the things you spend money on ie, food, resources, even the parent and toddler group. I have an accountant now who specialised in small businesses, like childminders so he knows his stuff and is very reasonable. He told me to keep all my receipts which i keep in plastic folders, ( one for each month), then when its time to do the dreaded tax return i take it all to him!

I had a letter from my local tax office with details of courses the inland revenue run. They run to help people who are self employed. Some were specific to tax returns and others were help with self employed for the first time, and book keeping. The web site gives more details. And they're free!

I think the link below has more details.

hello, i completed the full dhc via distance learning with the nec. My local CC funded the cost of the course.

I cant remember the website, but if you look under google at nec diploma homebased childcare, that should bring up the link.
I hope this helps.

Thanks for that.
It is so deflating, not knowing where to start!
Were the County Council helpful?
And was the course hard?
I take it that you do it on line but what about the exams.?
Sorry for all the questions

hello, I originally spoke to my area Childminding Network Co-ordinator, who gave me the telephone number for the lady who is responsible for the transformation funding. It was really straight forward, they agreed to pay 95%, I just had to pay the 5% which was about £40 (i think!).

The course was lonely at times, you work through the folders, completing assignments which get sent to a tutor (you will get all their details when/if you enrol).

The tutor will mark them and give you feedback, for each module one of the assignments get sent to CACHE for external marking.

No examinations !!!!!!!!

I did enjoy the course, but you do have to be committed as some of the modules are quite hard (ie the one about observations).

I tend to go through the 'distance learning' route as i really dont like going to college, and with my husband working late nights as and when, it would be difficult to commit one night a week to college. Therefore, for me, distance learning is ideal. I can study whenever I want.

I hope you manage to seek funding, and good luck if you do the course.
