I would definately get Mum to sign something.
How old is the child? Dependent on age I am not sure I would be happy with this, especially now the nights are drawing in.
Couldn't you pick up the child for peace of mind?

i do have twin boys aged 10 who do this .their club finishes at 4.15 and like you i only live 5 minutes from the school.

but i do have an independent arrival policy which both parents and children have to sign .

It depends on the age of the child and the season. I wouldnt be happy in winter when its dark.

For the sake of a two minute walk on your part
I would rather pick up than let walk home alone even at 9.

I would pick up or see if mum could get another mum to bring her back to you.

I walk a 9 year old back here - but then there's a busy road between me and the school

He doesn't have to walk with me.. he can walk with his friends... so long as he's close for the road :D
