Ad -Hoc, would this work??!!

Hi all,


I have decided to do a leaflet drop but I had thought that rather then just offering straight forward care I could also offer ad-hoc hours so Mums could go shopping, the gym, out for lunch etc. I would only be able to offer this if I had the space ( which I have plenty of at the mo!).

Is it ok to offer this and if so, what kind of contact do you do and how do you fill it in?

I was just thinking that word of mouth is a great thing and it might lead to something more permanent aswell as get me earning some money in the meantime.

Obviously I couldnt hold an all day place so Mum could go to the gym for an hour but there is a good chance even once busier that I could continue to slot someone in for an hour twice a week or whatever they wanted.

Is this a good idea or am I making life harder for myself? lol

When I started I did this and got very confusing. Was fine for a couple of months but then got 2 kids fulltime so couldnt do it and the parents that were ad hoc had got so used to it they werent too happy at me dropping them for fulltimers.

Had thought about it again as I have no fulltimers as they finished at xmas but dont know if I can do with the hassle.

unless its going to be a regular thing do short term contracts or make one of your own sor for the hour same rules but cheaper than buying proper ones, hope this helps

I have done this before (no response whatsoever to any ads re xmas shopping, medical/beauty appointments etc, all work from ex-mindees & personal recommendations).

With ad-hoc care I don't reserve a place at all. Parents just submit a booking form or phone me when they know what days/hours they want then I tell them if I'm available or not. I make it clear that there is no guarantee of a place, I'm very particular about following the rules re child ratios. They will only get a yes if another child is on holiday, off sick etc or if I happen to have an unfilled vacancy.

I've never offered this sort of care as it's very hard to keep the impetus up... I suppose it's a bit like running a creche from your house iykwim.

You wouldn't get to know the children or build up a rapport with them....

... but then again, you might get full or part time work out of it if the parents use you and like you...

Emma, I did Latin at school and failed miserably! We had to do it, I was at an old-style Grammar school... Ad hoc is one of the few phrases I remember ... it's sort of 'here and there' or 'a solution designed for a specific problem' xx

If you are doing a leaflet drop I'd be selective which houses you select otherwise you are waiting your leaflets. I'd go for houses with cars in the drive that look like the family have children - look for people carriers, cars with child/baby seats, etc.

Must say I don't think I'd want the hassle of this sort of part time care - how would you get to know the child?

I'd just be worried I'd end up with a screaming child I didn't know for hours whilst mum was off doing whatever!!!
