My darling puppy was attacked this afternoon by a huge dog.

We have had Cookie for just under two weeks and he was on his second ever walk today. Out of nowhere a dog (lurcher, we think) grabbed him. DD (11) had him on the lead and she thought the dog might be going for her, so it was all very traumatic. DH was on them like a flash and managed to wrestle the other dog off him.

We took Cookie straight to the vets and he has been admitted to hospital. He has two broken ribs and a perforated lung. We have to call at 11pm for an update and he is seeing the specialist tomorrow.

We are all so upset.

We went to the vets at 8am but he has to stay in and have more x-rays on his lungs. We have to go back at 6.30pm for the results.

We are so, so sad.

We've been able to bring him home! His x-rays were the same, so he hasn't got worse but they said he is not out of the woods yet. A step in the right direction though. We have to take him back on Sunday.

We have a medicine and tablets to give him - that will be DH's job. We were told to keep him calm - no jumping or anything, but he was so excited to get home so it was stressful. He is on painkillers so he thinks he is invincible.

I feel like I have been hit by a bus. I am emotionally drained and exhausted, but hopefully it's onwards and upwards from here.

Oh Maza i do feel for you. One of our dogs was poorly last year and keeping her calm after the operation was the hardest part.

I did the antibiotics and tablets though as she would take them from my hand. Sausages and pieces of chicken are good to put the tablets in.

Hope your dd/dh are okay xx

Thanks Fussy.

DD is actually ok. DH and I are more traumatised to be honest. He was very upset because it was his idea to go to the park where it happened - however, he was the one who got the big dog off and saved Cookie's life. I am now wary of taking him for a walk without DH because I would never have been strong enough to have got him off. His owner was at the other side of the field and no help at all.

What dogs do you have Fussy?

How awful for you all Maza ,
hope cookie is getting better. Did the other dogs owner even acknowledge what had happened?

Mama2three she had the most bizarre reaction in my opinion. I heard her call her dog's name because he was running towards another dog who was on the other side of the river. Then the dog spotted Cookie and grabbed him. The owner just stood there - about 100 meters away. As DH jumped in I started yelling at her to come and get her dog - when she heard me she started 'walking' over. I have gone over and over that in my mind - she could see that my child was caught up in the lead too! My husband then walked some distance to her carrying her dog by it's collar as she was still strolling over. She was so unfazed.

I took her contact details and she has apologised. I don't think she is a bad person - just very naïve. She has said she will get a muzzle for her dog. She also immediately offered to pay - but I don't think she realised the extent of his injuries at the time. We have told her that we will see how we get on with the insurance first. We don't want to punish someone who clearly loves dogs.

The vet today said that the swelling and bruising has gone down but the air which escaped from his lungs hasn't been absorbed yet but at least it hasn't travelled to his chest cavity. We have to go back to the vets next week.

How are you all?

Hope Cookie has carried on making progress?

Dd2 and ds2 are both desperate for another dog but I have drawn the line at 2.

We're ok thanks Fussy.

We are housebound though - good job the weather is terrible - so it's not quite the half term we were dreaming of!

Cookie went stir crazy last night - it was like he was possessed and was just running round the house and jumping/biting everything - he is just desperate to get out and play but we can't let him yet. DH carried him to the end of the street and back today for a change of scenery, but he started shaking and growling at two people on the other side of the road. Bless him, he hasn't even seen a dog since the attack. We have got him some new toys today too.

Fussy I couldn't imagine having two dogs, lol! I don't know where you find your energy and patience!

Cookie is making good progress.

It's now almost two weeks since the attack and we have just had another check up. The vet said his lung seems to have healed itself, so no need for an operation. It will be another couple of weeks before his ribs are healed properly. We can now let him off the lead in the garden - which he loves - but does go a bit crazy at times - our garden is on different levels with steps and little drops/walls and he is supposed to avoid leaping off those like he used to before the incident - sometimes he 'forgets'.

We can also start taking him for short walks again too. That is the really scary part though. I am on constant high alert now for other dogs and it has taken all the pleasure out of walking him. We saw a dog and then a cat from a distance and he started crying loudly. Hopefully we all start to relax and can move forward soon.

Very pleased cookie is on the mend. My dog was nearly killed by a staffy a few years ago ( my dog was on his lead) I still get anxious if I see a staffy ☹️

Yes, but it took a very long time thank you .unfortunately it has stayed with me as it was terrifying so always at the back of my mind when a dog runs at me particularly certain breeds.it was 3 years ago now.
