I've been a cm for 10 years now. For the first 6 years I also worked in a preschool. I always had one day off. So I started with 2 days on each job and then went to 3 days cminding one day preschool. I found it worked really well as I was with the same age group children. I was always up to date with everything concerned to do with the 'paperwork' side of each job as I took my lead from the preschool. They paid for all my training and for me to attend the training. In the end I wanted to work for myself so I'm now cminding 4 days a week. Just think what you would like to do and what fits in with your family life.

I've been wondering about this... Are we "allowed" to do a second job? What happens with being registered as self employed in that case etc?

Of course you can get a second job
MOH is right.

If you ...as an example...work 2 days as a cms you can work the other 3 anywhere you like.
Keep you cminding days free in case business starts booming again...and yes do not give it up.

The income you get from another job is added to your cm' income
Make sure they do not overcharge you in tax...or go freelance where they pay you gross and you deal with your taxes at the end of the year.
If you have an accountant they will advise you on all this.

All perfectly legal and allowable...make sure you get invoices for your payments to file safely away or PAYE if they use that using the correct Tax Code...check it out.

You could put your name down as supply cover for a few nurseries...if you fancy that...or look for something different which gives you more regular hours at £7.20 ph or even more from April 2016

Good luck!
I have done it and thoroughly enjoyed it
