Is there a Hindu community near you? It would be well worth a visit if there is. There might be some lights/illuminations hanging in the street and some lovely window displays. You could pick up some interesting resources which can be used year after year - diwas, a nice bangle, Diwali cards etc. You could try some new food. Look at the stunning outfits in the window - I would say buy a sample for a treasure basket/display but it would probably cost a fortune. Listen to some music. With parents permission your six year old might like to get her hands decorated - or you could get yours done. I downloaded/laminated a Mendi snap/matching game and girls in particular love it. Get a children's book from the library.

Do you know any children/neighbours who will be celebrating Diwali? You could make them a card. Try and find a child friendly version of the story of Ram and Sita. You could make a diwa out of clay or salt dough, although this is the most common activity and so your mindees might be doing it at pre-school/school. Remember it is a festival of light and so general light activities link in quite nicely.

Check if your library or sure start centre are doing any sessions to mark the festival.
