Hello just started child-minding in the last month. Whenever people find out that I am a child-minder all I get in response are face pulling and omg you wouldn't catch me doing that job. For some reason this really winds me up because I love my job. I wouldn't dream of being so insulting to a persons face about their choice of career. Has anybody else come across this? xx

Some people don't have patience with children that's why they react like that. I would take no notice because chances are you wouldn't want to do their job neither :)

I bet there are lots of professions who would have similar response eg: chiropodist, funeral directors, people who make or mend dentures, rat or pest control, sewage plant workers, refuse collectors - but at the end of the day we are glad that these people do the jobs that no one else wants to, they should (and we should) be congratulated and thanked.

I normally just smile sweetly and ask what their job is. You can then return the favour by asking why they chose that career

I'm "rude" because stating an honest opinion rather than seeing absolutely everything as "positive" and "amazing" is defined as "rude" these days.

I've yet to meet anyone who works from home whom anybody else regards as "really working" no matter what they do.

But it's not just CMs or home-working people anyway.

I was on duty at my station one evening (my previous job was on the railways) and a mum went through with a child who was being naughty (yes, it was so long ago, we were allowed to say "naughty" without being arrested for psychologically abusing the brat.) Mum stopped the child, pointed straight at me and said, "if you don't buck your ideas up, you'll be doing a job like that when you grow up." ........................nice.

I don't think being honest is rude but I did once when first moved to my area get on a bus going past my house I sat behind 4 women of various ages who were locals to over hear "that woman who lives there is terrible, she's got loads of kids, all different colours, must have loads of men and i'v seen the milk man stop off regularly" the milkman is my hubby and the children minded. I didn't say anything, just smiled inwardly. After living and working in the area now for over 20 years I'm now just "that mad woman who looks after all the kids" I think iv just grown a thick skin, it's what I know that counts not what others think they know x

I don't think what they said was rude as such, but I do think the way that its said was rude! I am all for speaking your mind, I think that is a fantastic thing to be able to do. What I think is even more fantastic is being articulate enough to say how you feel without making the other person feel hurt.
Would just be nice if I heard a few more positive comments from people I talk to and so far I have not come across any.:(

You should turn round and ask ' what makes you say that? '
Then when they answer you just keep probing.
Makes them look silly
