I use a digital food thermometer - Is that the same thing?
This is the one I use - had it for 18months - works well.

AVAX DT-7 - Digital LCD Food Thermometer Kitchen Cooking Probe for Wine, Food, Meat, Steak, Turkey, BBQ, Yerba Mate, etc. - Temperature range: -50C to 300C / -58F to 572F - (tube packaging and a protective cap included for better protection) - Batter (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BM6S0SA?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage)

Be warned though, once you have one, you can't help but use it all the time.....despite spending most of my grown up life cooking without one !

At my food/ hygiene inspection I was asked if I used one.

This ones fantastic value thanks flora, this is what I'm looking for.
Lol yes I can see me doing the exact same thing!!!
Do you use it primarily to check the temperatire of food before serving to little ones?
Did you specifically request a food/hygiene visit flora? Who does this? Do your LA require it/do it as part of you registerong as a CM?

I don't use a food probe, but then I serve mainly cold food. The only things I serve hot are toast with beans or cheese, scrambled eggs, jacket potatoes or pasta. I've never seen the need to probe a slice of toast to see whether or not it's the right temperature :p

I do have a fridge thermometer and find I automatically look at it when I open the fridge.

Started like that but now automatically use it for all our food too.

I rang to tell them I was registered as a CM, the local environmental Officer working on behalf of Food Standards Agency came out to inspect 6 months later. My LA do this automatically, but I don't think all do.

OFSTED automatically register you now.
