Hello,

I am just registering as a childminder and when my doctor filled in my health declaration they said I couldn't bend, lift or carry due to the fact that I have 2 cracked discs in my back (sounds worse than what it is and it's very common) it's basically wear and tear! Anyway I asked to see the doctor as I didn't agree with this in the slightest! I have a 20 month old girl who I have to do all of those things for on a daily basis! The doctor changed it in the end and I got it sent off but now ofsted have sent me another health consent form saying they need more information... Has anyone had the same problem at all and will this now jeopardise my career as a childminder? :-( all comments will be welcome as I feel Iv come so far and now feel really disappointed. Thank you Amy

It's quite common to get a referral to Ofsted's doctors so try not to worry about it too much.

They will check that you are ok to work with children. The worst that may happen is they set an age limit so you can't have little ones ... but if you are ok to lift and carry then you'll be fine xx

Thank you for replying :-) the thing is I am a little worried about the age limit being placed as this could potentially make things difficult with "business" as such. My doctor stated that I couldn't lift anything over 4 stone! I do completely understand but I know my limits more than this doctor who looked through a few old notes! I'm so worried about it :-( x

My health declaration had disc degeneration on, which again is wear and tear (although not the same as you), the dr also nicely put that I was anorexic as a teenager. Anyway, Ofsted were fine about it, but the inspector just wanted to talk to me in detail at the pre reg inspection.

I'm terrible with weights, but would you be lifting children over 4 stone anyway?

I had to go and see a specialist hired by Ofsted. It all went well and despite me being really worried I am now registered :-) Dont worry, aslong as you can demonstrate you can do the job you will be fine :-)

Thank you so much for you replies! It has made me feel a lot better about things. Mine is disc degeneration too, I have 2 cracked discs and they Are slightly bulging which means it is quite close to the nerve! Again sounds a lot worse than what it is because it's just classes as wear and tear! I have sent off my consent form today and I did write a cover letter too (hope that does more good than making things worse) just so nervous about the whole situation, especially the pre reg visit!
