SEN requirements are changing!

We all need to be aware that the SEN requirements are changing in September this year... at the same time as the Eyfs is being revised.

There is some information coming out now including this article in Nursery World magazine and your LA should be putting on training. We will have further advice on the group nearer the time as well so that everyone is updated :D

Further to Sarah Neville's post above about the SEN requirements changing this September, I thought I would share some main points from my training the other evening.

*LA's will be required to publish their 'Local Offer' - setting out in one place clear, comprehensive and accessible information about the support and opportunities available for parents and carers of children and young people with SEN.
*Integrated education, health and care plans will replace statements of SEN (this reduces duplication and repetition for families).
*I have been asked to compile my own 'Local Offer' which will become part of the information which the Family Information Service can distribute which highlights my inclusive practice and also how my setting could accommodate a child or young person with SEN.

The sort of questions which I have been given to help compile my own Local Offer are:
*Do I or another member of staff (eg another cm or assistant) specialise in SEN?
*My ethos/mission statement for including children and young people with SEN. How do I aim to meet their needs?
*How do you identify that a child is not meeting appropriate age related milestones?
*How do I promote positive relationships and how can families access additional support?
*How will I communicate with other providers and families who also care for a child with SEN?
*Do I provide an enabling environment?
*What other 'reasonable' adjustments can I make to my setting?
*What experience do I have working with children and young people with additional needs?

Your LA should have training on this SEN reform and it is important that you attend if possible so you are fully aware of what is expected of you.
