Maternity pay

Hi
I'm due to start maternity leave in a few weeks time,
I sent off my form to claim maternity pay but I haven't had a response from anyone about it, do any of you have any experience of claiming mat pay ?
Should I have received a letter confirming I'll get it or will it just automatically start on the date I put I was starting my leave?
Starting to panic that I'm not going to get it, I'm ip to date with my national insurance payments.
