Hey, so paid my first lot of tax this jan, and I am certain I paid way too much, I don't think I filled out my tax return correctly...I busted my gut to save each week, and when I was talking to one of my parents, who picks up about £26,000 per year, I paid nearly as much tax as her. So my question is, can I start filling out my self assessment now, and add to it as the year goes on...and if it is much less than most recent bill will it look suspicious??

Just to clarify another point if anyone can help me...I pay rent, £1.,170 per month, what percentage of this can I put through my tax? A CM friend of mine said you can't claim for bedrooms or bathrooms, but only living and kitchen, I got really confused, and I don't think I put through enough! X

Rent is 10% if you work 40 hours a week or a proportion same as council tax.

Did you have to pay some tax on account too? If in a tax year your earnings mean your tax is more than £1000 you have to pay half again on account for the next tax year and the other half by July. Then if you have earnt less you get a rebate and if you have earnt more you pay more IYSWIM

Then in Jan you will have already made the two payments for this year 2013/14 so should have nothing or little to pay . You are paying the tax upfront.
