I'm in middle of doing my first aid refresher. Never been told before but have been told that as working in care profession should get myself vaccinated against hep a and if get charged for it put it through books. It lasts for 10 years. This is because of working with young children. Anyone else told this.

Not been told this. I would take a doctor's advice on this one, personally, rather than a first aid trainer.

Well I had an appointment anyway with nurse. She said that so did not need to have it for her job. Not come Accross it before but did offer to give it to me and there was no cost and it lasts hiw for 20 years and I don't plan to still be minding in 20 years time. Deb

Are you sure it was hep a? That's quite specific, and is usually given, I think, to workers who deal with sewage (not human waste)???

Could it have been hep c? That's much more common, I had it as a medical student and nurses, healthcare assistants etc do too. The risk is in the exposure to human waste, pathogens and bodily fluids in the sick population, so I can understand why a first aid trainer might have linked nappies etc with needing this vaccination.

We shouldn't need either though.

Agree with this too, my first aid trainer had no medical background, he was an IT teacher teaching first aid as another subject rather than his specialism.

A friend of mine was told on First Aid course that children playing with sand should wear goggles! They do sometimes come out with strange opinions of their own which aren't compulsory or part of the course.

Many years ago when i did the NNEB at college i was told to have the Hep vaccination (dont no which one now) due to working with young children. Something to do with bodily fluids etc. I did have it mainly cos it was free as i was in f/t education. And doctor at time said it was adviseable. It was 3 jabs over a few months i think. I think we build up a certain amount of immunity to things over the years anyway.
