Child having small operation

A lo is due to have s minor operation on a monday. Mum said she would come on the Tuesday. It will be a general anaesthetic I said that I would not be sure I should have her the next day as she might not feel good. Am I right? Just don't know what to say. What do you all think?

It really depends what the operation is and how lo is afterwards.

My son has had several operations under a GA, but always went back to nursery or school the next day as he was fine.

As long as your mindee isn't in pain I probably wouldn't see any problem with her coming the next day. If it's a minor op and a light anaesthetic she shouldn't feel bad the following day, although I would plan a quieter day.

If it was me, I would tell mum that as long as everything is straight forward & lo is OK I would have her back, but if she is at all unwell she will have to stay home.

Ds has had 2 hernia ops and to be fair I refused to leave his side for about 3 days. He was very young though at 4/5 months old.

That is very young, so no wonder you didn't want to leave him. Mine oldest was 9 months when he had an op and I couldn't leave him as he needed more care.

The second was 18mths when his ops started, but they were minor ops and he was up and about very soon afterwards. Even with stitches he was fine.

My only worry would be the general anaesthetic....I've had only had a couple of knee ops but was told both times (2 different hospitals) that I should have someone with me for 24 hours afterwards incase I had a reaction to the anaesthetic....

The 24 hour rule is still current. Im having a laparoscopy in march and that is still on the letters.

He was, in real terms he was only 2 months old as he was 10 weeks prem too. Hence the hernias. It could have been worse as the glued his wounds so no stitches.

Glad your children were ok but not so good that they needed ops x

For me it would depend on what the operation was for, if it was for hernias as other people have mentioned then I wouldn't - ex mindee had 2 hernia ops and his mum said he could barely walk the next day, also she was told that he shouldn't do anything that could break open the wound, so she took week off work for both ops.

My son when he was 6 had an op and was advised against returning to school for a minimum of 24hrs after op due to delayed reactions. I actually kept him off school for 5 days as he was quite tender and was anxious about his scar being knocked his school were quite shocked I'd sent him back in after 5 days and thought I would of kept him off longer.

depends on the op. I know lots of children have had grommets fitted under general and back at school the next day

Yep agree it does depend. My son had grommets under general and was back at school the next day.

Back when I was young :D we used to have teeth taken out by being knocked out with gas and have to go back to school afterwards.
