I have finally got round to working out how many hours I have worked each month and how much I can claim for heating, lighting and other costs.
The problem is our utility bills are averaged out over a year on a budget scheme. So do I have to work out the exact cost of the gas and electric we use for tax purposes? I am interested to know what other people do in this situation.

I just take the recommended percentage of whatever my direct debit is each month - if I have underpaid or overpaid when the gas/electric company read the meters I just adjust my figures at the end of the year. Or you could just put a one off payment through for a years worth of gas/electric - you don't have to necessarily show the figures monthly.

I used to do it monthly but last year I just did a percentage of the whole years bills for all utilities. Much simpler.

Although ours is on a direct debit each month we still get a quarterly invoice so I put mine in the month the bill comes it has always worked for me like this

Thank you for all your replies. I really don't know where I would find these things out if the forum did not exist. :)
