hi

This is a really random question but I'm hoping someone could help me.

When a job is part-time it posts the pay at full time rate and then says how many hours the job is - so eg: £14,000 pro rata hours are 16 hours a week. I know I can calculate back and then multiply by 16 to get the rate I would be on BUT how do I know what the hourly rate is? I do not know what the full time hours are!

Are full time hours generally accepted to be 35 hours a week? 37 hours a week? 40 hours a week? Or something completely different? Calculating back based on these different hours make a big difference to what the hourly rate would be and whether it would be worth me giving up a days childminding to take on a different role in a pre-school.

I think anything above 35 hours is classed as full time. One company I worked for I did 40 hours, Another 37 both were full time positions. My hubby does 35 hours which his company class as full time. It would he worth asking them what they class as full time hours :)

I think you'll find this applies with employers:

"When I use a word", Humpty Dumpty said in a rather scornful tone, "it means just what I choose it to mean - neither more nor less."
(Lewis Carroll)

You'll also encounter a strange phenomena, known as "Payroll Maths" in which the hours worked will always exceed the hours paid. :(
