I was under the impression that if my kids have friends over that those friends would have to count into my numbers.

Yes one of the drawbacks of childminding is that you have to ensure you are within numbers at all times so if your children are under 8 they can only have friends to play if you have a space available even though you are not actually minding or being paid for the child.

How old are they? if over 8 they don't count in your numbers but if under then yes you have to include them so it would put you over you 6 under 8 :(

Maybe have different friends over on different nights

I am in Scotland and we can't go over 6 under 16! I make sure I am never full anyway as prefer that but also means my girls can have a friend over too xx

I'm in Scotland and I was told by a care inspectorate officer that if the visiting child can go home themselves or parents can be there straight away if you call them then it is ok for them to have friends over and they do not count in your numbers. Also you can have up to 8 under 16 if 2 are over 12 but this needs to be on your certificate, I recently was granted this as my ds is just about to turn 12 but had to apply for a variation to get it.
