I've just sponsored a puppy to become a guide dog. I thought it would be nice for the children to follow it's progress.

We get sent updates and photos and at the end a photo of the dog and its new owner.

We're not allowed to visit it but we are able to send letters and photos to the puppys handler.

I was wondering if anyone else has done this and how it worked out.

Oh that sounds lovely Cherry - do you get any response from the handler?

Trouble is I'm sure I'd want the dog if I did it!

It doesn't say if they get in touch, but I suppose it's up to the handler. It would be nice to get something back but I suppose it's a busy job.

I have 5 after school children whom I'm sure would love to write letters and send photo's, that's why I asked if anyone had done something like this to see if we would get a response.

I'm thinking of doing a pin board and putting it's progress up with photo's so everyone can see how it's doing.

Can't wait to find out more about it so I can say he or she and not it:laughing:

aw, thats a lovely idea - i want to become a puppy walker, where you get a guide dog puppy for a year before its old enough to go into training, but i think it will be a lot of work if you've got a house full of kids as well - maybe when i'm a bit more sure of myself - they pay for all the food and vets bills you just provide love and training!

A man from the Guide dog charity knocked on the door this afternoon and asked if I would like to sponsor a dog and I'm very wary about people doorstep selling but he had all the paperwork to confirm who he was and left a lot of info and even gave me bookmarks for all my mindees.

This is their web site

You have just given me a great idea. My husbands family have a charity in memory of his brother who died after losing his sight and we are raising funds to provide counsellors for young people losing their sight. I might ask them to sponser a pup from the funds but have the stuff sent to me for the benefit of the children. Seeing as they are expecting me to run 5k to raise funds I hope they agree. Thanks.

I just received some info and pictures on the puppy I'm sponsoring.

His name is Gus and he was born in February, isn't he lovely :)

I've put a notice board up with everything I've been sent and hopefully we should have some more pictures soon.

The children are busily writting letters and drawing pictures to send to his handler.

He's beautiful!

I've been thinking about doing this since I read your original post and now I think I'm going to do it too:)

My FIL suddenly lost his sight totally about 18mths ago and although he doesn't have a guide dog (MIL does the job perfectly well  ) I think it would be a great way to help my girls and the mindees understand a little more.

Thanks so much for posting this

Oh he is gorgeous. I want one!! Lol.

Definately going to look into this now. My kids have been wanting a dog for a while so maybe this will curb the urge for a while as well as being educational.:)

That is a great thing to do!!

I used to sponsor a dog (we lived in a flat and weren't allowed any pets, so that made up for it -a bit anyway)
It was not a guide dog, but one in a cat and dog home.

We used to get letters for x-mas etc but never actually contacted the dog centre directly. (I don't think that was part of the deal)

It was still nice to get the updates they sent out every few months.

Hope the dog handler will get back to you.

Keep us posted
