A friend of mine has asked if she can work as a volunteer with me one day a wk. Are there any rules other than a crb check that i need to follow? Can I have more ch on this day?

If you plan on leaving her alone with the children at any point she would need crb, first aid & safeguarding training and would need to be registered as your assistant.
I'd be a bit cautious about taking more children on if you're relying on a volunteer. What if she decides it's not for her or if she's offered a paid job?

If she is coming each week you need to fill in the EY2 form off of the Ofsted website and get a DBS, even as a volunteer not being left in sole care.
If you want her to be in charge of children you need to make her an assistant and do first aid and follow your induction process. Insurance and parental permission is also required. Have a look at the assistant section and a thread by Blue Lion who is currently going through this.
