One of our butterflies has just come out of the chrysalis in front of our very eyes. Absolutely fascinating. This is the first time we have seen them emerge - usually just notice one has appeared. The children loved it and had magnifying glasses and stared and stared. Stupid me was that busy getting the magnifying glasses and shrieking with excitement I forgot the camera and so only got a pic after it came out

Always exciting to new animals born/hatch/emerge, we have an incubator and I love watching eggs hatch.

OMG you have turned me into a catapillar hunting freak!

I've just been out in the garden hunting for them.........the only mindee I have this morning is alseep! I must have looked a right nutter looking under all the leaves on my own.

Well I found 1..........yes only 1.:D

It's so tiny I can hardly see it. It was on my runner beans but judging by the munched leaves there must be many more that have gone into hiding!

I have placed my 1 and only lonely catapillar into my net cage with a runner bean leaf then hidden the cage. There is no way the children can see it, they'll think I've just put a leaf in there! My own son has poor vision so he'll just get cross if he can't see it. When he's bigger I'll share my find.

Shame you missed it Annie - have you let any of them go yet? I'm curious to know how long they live, I didn't think it was long.

Can't fancy getting one myself though

It says to let them go after a few days. Last year only 3 of the 5 caterpillars became butterflies and 1 was "born" with deformed wings so we knew it wouldnt fly away. Ciaran called him "Dead". We still have a pic on the playroom wall of "Dead" The other two were called Fred and Ted. This year we have 5 chrysalis' and 2 have turned into butterflies so far. We have filled the habitat with flowers, twigs and leaves and have to squirt a water/sugar solution onto the flowers and then you watch the probiscus (Big word for me;) ) come out and they feed. It is fascinating.

Believe me I am not going to touch them  God I would poop my pants when we release them if it comes flying near my face. I would probably whack it and stamp on it in front of the kids. I am fine with them in the habitat but you should have seen me jump when I had to drop the feed in and one flapped its wings.

I am doing it for the children because I am a good childminder

Am i wrong in thinking you could use one of those net washing pop up baskets with lid and put loads of leaves sticks etc and caterpillars in it will have the same effect or am i having blonde moment.......again!

crazybones

I dont see why not. Mine is a pop-up mesh thing with a zip at the top to release them and feed them. Its only about 12 inches tall though. If you buy the caterpillars they come in a tub with food (thick stuff) on the bottom which they eat until they climb up to the top and hang as chrysalis. At this point you pin the paper they are hanging from to the inside of the mesh thing.
When they turn into butterflies you mix 200 mls water and 2 tsp sugar and drop it onto the flowers inside a couple of times a day.

Mine wouldn't come out of the net so had to scoop them up onto a plant, so be warned!
