A mother has just texted to me say her son had an eye infection and is very contagious. I have him Monday and Tuesday so as he's ill and not attending will I still be paid?
I don't charge if I'm unable to work.
Thank you

if you have it within your contract that parent pays if child is ill they should still pay.

What did you put in your contract regarding the child being sick? This would tell you if you will still be paid.

It depends what your fees policy says?

Mine states that I charge for children's time off/ illness but not my own. So in that case yes I would still be paid for the child being off ill

it depends what you've got in your contract. Mine is full fee for when children are off ill and no fee if I'm not available to work if I'm ill.

Yes it says I should get paid but the mother is saying that the child is fine in himself x

He may be fine in himself, but he has a contagious eye infection so cannot attend.

So you should be paid. X

This is no different to excluding for a tummy upset. Often the LO can be themselves again very quickly but they still mustn't return for 48hr after the last bout.

do you feel that mum is trying to get you to care for him as he's 'well in himself'? If he's contagious he should stay home personally but not sure if you have an illness policy Health Protection agency say that there is no exclusion period for conjunctivitis - or at least the copy I have from a few years ago - but this may have changed??,

Yes or trying to get me to say no don't bring him so she don't have to pay.

was it conjunctivitus or some other eye infection?
I agree with Vickie that you can not exclude if it is not on the exclusion list from the HPA.

I'd charge full the only time I don't charge is if I'm ill or on holiday everything else is full fees

I had this conversation with some other childminders on a course yesterday. At the end of the day, regardless of guidelines, your setting is your setting. I have stated in my sickness policy, that I have the last say on whether I will look after a child with any illness, as I have to take into account myself and other children here. I seldom do exclude, but if I had a young baby say, then I would be much more cautious about looking after another child with an infectious illness.
If the child is off sick for whatever reason, I get paid. I have that stated in my contract.
