this is a good skill. With children doing this ideally make sure they have lots of opportunity for different smallworld activities to practice and develop their skills.

Look out for if they are involving other children in their scenarios and whether they are negotiating the story and rules together which is a great PSED skill as well as communication and thinking (creative) skill.

A good extension activity or activities is to read a story for a period of say a week, ones with familiar phrases that are repeated are good. Get them to anticipate what is happening in the story next, or tell what did happen or why - with questions from you.

They can act out the story, make puppets to join in etc.

This will cover Literacy (reading) and creative development.
